I saw this and thought it was something current that might be an interesting modeling project.

If you look behind that loco, it appears there's another oddity--not 100% sure because it's not all in the frame, but there was a GE (U-something, maybe U-23) that had kind of a 'cab forward' configuration that held a larger crew. I believe the SCL owned it. Didn't really catch on, probably because of the switch to 2-man crews and less grade crossing protection.

You're thinking of the BQ23-7. Built in the late 70's as a standard B23-7 with a "Quarters" cab, the thought was the large cab would replace a caboose. Only 10 were built, all for SCL/Family Lines. Didn't catch on for several reasons as you alluded to, but the primary knock I've heard was also NO collision protection for crews. Once CSX inherited these they plated over the cab windows and made them into "B" units to eliminate any possibility for a crew to occupy one on the point. They have all since been scrapped.

Bachmann made a nice model in the 80's, one in a very accurate SCL scheme, and another in a fanciful Chessie (as luck would have it, part of CSX). I have both and will post pictures later.

That loco in the background can't be a BQ though. The lines are similar, and while it at first looks like an old Family Lines paint scheme, it isn't. The original BQs were all scrapped several years ago, and most were painted into CSX before that. It might be an older electric or something...?

BTW it's cool to see that 50 and 60 year-old locomotives can still be rebuilt and put to use. Interesting handrail bend. And yeah that engine decal would be easy enough to print, but I'd need a slightly better shot (straight-on).

I think the DL-109 is available from LifeLike, Proto1000 series.

Thanks, GIC for the information on the BQ23-7's. As far as the Rock Island unit goes (that's pictured), I believe the proto photo was taken after being re-engined with an EMD prime mover--notice how the roof had to be angled up to accommodate the larger equipment. The model shown seems to be original Alco.

Hey Adams,

If you go down the topic list, you will see the old Bachmann loco that I rebuilt. The shell is actually very nicely molded and is easily fitted to the newer Bachmann GE B23-7 chassie.

Hi all,

the second engine is a NdeM (Nacionales de Mexico) E60-2 which have been traded in for modern diesels. Some of them now belong to the Black Mesa & Lake Powell RR:
