Howdy!

Quick background.. I run a comic and gaming store in south Louisiana... I had a customer call me yesterday and ask if I ever wanted a train set as a kid and I said yup.. he asked if I ever got one and I sad no.. and he hung up on me...

He showed up an hour later with this...

Still sealed in the box....

Seemed cool and it was really nice of him.. but the longer is sat here, the more people freaked out about it. I posted at a comic board I go to and one of the guys is a transformers nut and he claims they are almost non-existant in any condition.. and un-opened may be damn near unique...

Anyone have any other information on this? Is it really that big of a deal? He's claiming its easily worth a grand, if not more... Im doubting that.. but im curious.

Any information would be appreciated!

Hi--you could get a grand for it if the right nut comes along L-O-L. Amazing is that it is still sealed in the box. With the new Transformer movie of last year bringing back memeories of the 80's Transformer toys--This set has been on Ebay quite a bit. The mint sets have been listed also but are hard to find un-used. Some sets i have seen listed mint sold around $150.00 and higher. If you find a buyer that will give you a grand for it-SELL. The GI Joe set is similar to this one. This set has unique couplers on the cars though that will not match up with standard Tyco freight cars. I do not know the complete ins and outs of this set--but the caboose transforms into a plane i beleive and the boxcar transforms also. The loco has hidden features that transform also. More about this train-- On ebay this set has been listed as "Future train" "space train" "Nasa train" and other names. They are usually listed as pieces or incomplete used and nonworking sets-missing decals etc. It was very generous of that individual to give you that mint set. Congradulations[:D]

Second what Bryan said. A lot of these sets are out there, but played with and missing pieces and so people have no idea what they're trying to sell. But there's usually one lurking on Ebay every couple of weeks...

HOWEVER... Yours would be COMPLETE and that makes it noteworthy. There were lots of cardboard odds and ends, sticker sheets, little plastic figures, and other bits that were easily lost or broken or destroyed. Most of the sets that survive - even those with the box - only have the trains themselves and little else.

That set Ken linked is about as complete as you'll ever see for one that's actually open. That will be your price gauge. I'd say $150 is not unreasonable, but somehow I doubt these sets have garnished that kind of following yet.

Word to the wise: As "Transformers" go, this set was actually pretty lame. The Caboose/Plane is kinda neat, but that's about it. The boxcar unfolds cleverly but is basically a static platform. The gondola was essentially a hidden load (lose the load and guess what you have? That's right - a plain ol' gondola). And the engine had a flip-up panel with an antenna in place of the horn - big whoop.

Still a nice find though! I'm not sure if "sealed in box" would really bring any worthwhile premium though. If I were you I'd bust that sucker open , set it up, and goof around for a bit [:D]

You can't put a value on that item. It is very rare that a stranger walks into your life to fulfill your wish.

I can't tell you what to do, it's not my place, but.... if I was on the receiving end I would keep it for display as a reminder there is good left in this world or open it and play with it like I would have as a child. My most cherished pieces are those that came as gifts and they will remain in my posession until the day I die.

The timing here is very coincidental. I've been after a decent set of these for a while. I just picked up a complete loose set minus the decals. I opened it up in front of my 7 year old and he fell in love with it. My kid was trying to wheel and deal with me all day to gain posession of it. I found that quite amusing. At the end of the day I came to my senses, I gave it to him and he can play with it to his hearts content. Priceless.

Now, here's I Tyco set I do remember here in Australia. My first job was at a company that made printer's proofs. This was in 1986, and I still have one of those proofs from a page of a K-mart catalogue. I've just scanned it for your interest.

The caboose is shown in aircraft form. Oh, the realism of those high voltage pylons. [V]

I wonder how much confusion came from the wording "transformer included". It did of course refer to the power pack.

I do recall having one of the Transformers locos in my shop in the 90s, but never saw the whole set.
