This tourist line is located in the Great Smokey MTN's of North Carolina. It is the Great Smokey MTN RR. They offer 4 different excursions daily and specials through out the year. Got to GSMRR.com for more info. I took the pictures below on saturday April 18th 2008 in Bryson City NC. The station is located on the corner of Everette St and Depot St in Bryson. Lots of great places to eat here also. There is also a full stock hobby shop to the back of the station called Smokey Mtn model trains which has one of the largest Lionel displays in the US and an operational layout that the public can operate. The Great Smoky MTN RR has been in several movies. One of the most famous roles of the railroad was in the Fugitive. Bryson city was called Doverville in the movie. The photo of the crossing is where Harrison Ford drove the ambulance through with gates coming down and lights flashing. There were many other scenes filmed in the area also. They have one trip that will take you past the wreck area from the movie. The cabooses pictured can be rented individually or for groups and full meal option

GSMRR # 777

Next 2 picts for AF - G-I-C - Midmo and anyone else whose a fan of the Chessie

Great pictures! I have always heard that the railroad has some of the steepest grades of any railroad in the U.S, and even short trains ran in multiple consists. Must be an interesting and scenic ride, and that massive wreck scene in "The Fugitive" still ranks as one of the most intense train crashes in movie history.

I've been wanting to design decals for that "Illinois Southern" roadname they used in the movie. Problem is, that high-hood GP30 was one ugly mutha.

Neat pics. Looks like someone had one too many Bachmann cars lying around when they repainted that caboose. It IS an ex-Chessie one though.

Great pictures and the ride was probably great too. Nothing special but there was a small 3 piece country/blurgrass band that worked the depot in Bryson. Two members were husband and wife and the husband's brother was our minister here in Georgia. Both brothers died within 18 months of each other. Public TV did a segment on the GSMRR that aired about 4 years ago and showed the band and alot of Bryson along with the route of the train. terry

Thanks for the comments. The Great Snmoky Mtns is a beautiful and fun palcwe to visit. Lots of train action in this area. If it wasn't for the railroad--it would not be as popular as it is now. I can remember back in the 80's-Bryson City was sorta dying out as most mtn towns and small cities. The railroad has brought a lot of jobs to this area as well as eating places.

Terry--i remember that band also--they now have a lot more performers along with the many events.

G-I-C Yep to many of those bachmann cabooses--L-O-L--i agree that was one ugly GP30

CT -- They have steep grades--i beleive you may be referring to Saluda -- which is 90 minutes south of Bryson -- and it is the steepest mainline in the US. I will be posting pictures of it this year. The line is currently banked-all mainline track in place and inspected weekly. All signals still in place also but the RR crossing signals have covers over them. Rumor has it that it will be reopened to handle container traffic from Charleston SC- to Asheville NC then onto Memphis and Knoxville

More pictures will be coming of this line.

Thanks Af--This was probably the most railfanning i have done since being married. This area has a lot of train related stuff to photgraph thanks To the Smoky MTN RR. While most of it has been in the area since being constructed--it wasn't brought into the limelight until the tourist trains started running.

I had never spotted this thread before. I always drive over to Bryson, NC when I go to Pigeon Forge, TN... Used to go to the Cherokee, NC casino for my wife to play. While she was there I would head to Bryson... Just a nice area with the trains right there close.
