November 2007 CN at Bayview Junction. One of the busiest train watching spots. CN & CP mainlines intersect, along with GO Transit, Via Rail, and the daily Amtrak New York to Toronto train.
I read somewhere 120 trains a day pass through the Junction. They just triple tracked the main line last year to accomodate GO Transit.

Here is picture taken from my cousins 2 story 5,000 sq ft home(paid for--wish i could say the same fo my house) in Almond NC. He has a deck on each level of the house with views of the Fontana Lake which is part of the TVA(Tenneessee Valley Authority). The view also has the RR trestle, which belongs to the Great Smokey MTN's RR. The tourists trains stop on the bridge for scenic photo shoots which many photo's of his home are taken also with zoom lenses as the conductor is his friend who tells all the single women on the train that he is single. The home is at 2500 ft elevation. The trains carry tourists to the Nantahala Gorge For rafting trips. More of the train will be posted in a video shortly as i just returned home from visiting. The first photo is with my zoom of max 7X from his deck. The second photo is standard view looking toward trestle. The hwy is US 19. zoom view April 19 2008

Took this photo on the way to my family reunion. This is in OLD FORT NC. THis view was featured on TRAINS magazines front cover one year. It looks like an real life-like train set that came to life. This is the beginning of Norfolk Southerns famous loops. The loops climb up the mtn into Asheville. I had just missed the first train of the day being pushed up. The trains are broken into sections due to the 6% grade. The trains run right past Andrews Geyser US National Park which is in the Pisgah National Forest. The top of the mtn is the Eastern Continental divide

These pictures were taken last fall while at work.
High hood SD40-2 Norfolk Southern entering Martin Marietta Quarry-South Charlotte - NC

Ballast cars being loaded at quarry--photo taken from inside my truck as i was being loaded with ABC gravel. The cars are being pulled by a loader with cable attached--not in picture. The cable is attached near the step area to pull car up. Loading of car is done manually by spotters on the ground giving signals to loader operator to pull car

Hey Mike. I've seen that engine so many times[:D] I went to the museum a few times on school field trips back in elementary school. It is BIG. I have a pic of me standing next to the drive wheels which are bigger than me.
Brian: I like that shot of the engine in the rain. Very cool.

I took these pictures today at the Smiths Falls Railway Museum. The museum is a restored train station from the early 1900's.
The first one is a CP S-3

Next is a 1947 Cadillac

And finally is a CN dental car. It travelled around Ontario (in the 60's I think) to small towns which did not have dentists offices. The museum also has 4 other CN passenger cars, all of which have been burned[B)]

Well around here you only see 5 different locomotives, although one seems intent on avoiding my camera lens. All that really goes on is either taking some hoppers loaded up with coal to the nearby generating plant, or covered hoppers taking chemicals or ground rubber or something out to a Michelin plant to make tires.
HATX #'s 910 and 914.

This is where they unload whatever it is for making tires.

These are two more of the five, HLCX #'s 8151 and 7172.

This is CN #1009, a 4-6-0 at a museum near Moncton, New Brunswick. I wish I could've gotten a better angle, but it was stuffed into a storage shed with an RSC-14, an S-12, an ancient John Deere tractor, a couple of speeders, and two cabeese to boot.

And lastly is one of my favourite pictures. It's an old paint company named Tibbet's Paint, that went bankrupt some 25-odd years ago. The line is still in use, but the building certainly isn't.

Here are a few pic's... an array of colours/colors and selective power... Includes the great Red White and Blue in full splender:
A 2 for 1 shot... Kamloops hosts the Rocky Mountaineer Rail Tours three times weekly.

A potential repainting? Dunno... althought I've seen shots of these going through Chicago!

"Yeah, Smith... I will apply the brake wheel in this cut of cars... as this freshly painted (ex-CV) car rolls by... by... where the ell is the brake wheel?

and speaking of CSX... (aint this guy far from home?)

and now, for something Barely Noticeable and Simply Facinating...

now, who wants more? I've got the LORAM, Great Northern, DWP & CV, CN GMD-1's, spring frogs, rail adapters, point protectors, CN Robot GP-9m's... what else? All these, and much more circa 2005!
John
I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

I may have posted this some time ago...
Unfortunately, this can no longer be photographed.

# 1589 GP-9r Canadian Pacific.
Walther's Trainline product made this particular locomotive, only, it's Soo Line 2411.
Do not attempt to adjust your monitor... The colour/color distortion is red paint well sun-bleached scarring.

I was driving my mom home from work today when I heard a familiar sound...
/tyco/forum/uploaded/MM 1498/DSCF4311.jpg
AFTER THAT TRAIN!
Yes, even though this was my first time driving in any sizable snowfall, I decided to see if I could get a good video of this train. And I did.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVxKgqQpszc
Please, try not to mind my mother and I talking about this and that throughout the video. Anyway, so this was my first real winter drive, and my first time to be stopped at a railroad crossing. Good enough for a Thursday afternoon!
Oh, this is also the largest train I can remember seeing locally. Not in terms of the number of cars, but in the amount of power up front. (10,250 HP ) Here's some info on these locomotives:
- HLCX #7869 - EMD model SD40-2. Built in March of 1979. Ex-BN unit. Has seen service mostly in the Ohio area.
- HLCX #8151 - EMD model SD40-2. Built in July of 1980. Ex-BN unit. Has seen service mostly in the Kentucky and Illinois area.
- LLPX #1504 - EMD model GP15-1. Built in August of 1979. Ex-CSX/Conrail unit. Has seen service mostly in the New York and Nova Scotia area.
- LLPX #2269 - EMD model GP38-2 (but in GP40 shell). Built in January of 1966. Ex-Illinois Central unit. Has seen service mostly in the Illinois and Nova Scotia area.
- HLCX #7172 - EMD model SD40-2. Built in 1979. Ex-BN unit. Has seen service mostly in the Ohio area. (Was also derailed in a collision with a flatbed semi-trailer at a grade crossing in Sullivan, Indiana.)

That would be CBNS, or the Cape Breton & Central Nova Scotia railway. They have a few of their own locomotives, but those are only in operation near Sydney. (about 150 miles away)

Tis indeed the Cape Breton and Central Nova Scotia RR, a division of Rail America. Now the big question I have is who owns Rail America? Hint - The HQ's is in Jacksonville, FL....

Oh, and Loopy, RailAmerica is owned by Fortress Investment Group. However, it's RailAmerica's HQ that is in Jacksonville, FIG ( ) is based in New York, New York.

I've actually started to passively railfan when I've been out & about. First just two quick shots from Pittsburgh. One off the CSX main (former P&LE) next to the bike trail at station square.
Old bridge near the backside of town, now part of the rails to trails network that spans the city. Was part of a wye for Cheesie System's rail network (B&O formely). Back in the late 80's it carried a special commuter train powered by F7's into the old B&O station in the city. The track & station are now just a memory, and the equipment has moved on.

Much further north of Pittsburgh, you can find a very old railroad still in existance (though now owned by CN). The Bessemer and Lake Erie has still maintained its black & orange fleet since the CN take over in 2004. And they still serve their orginal purpose of moving iron ore between lake erie and the last big steel mill in Pittsburgh.

Today we took our grandson to the circus and rode the TRE (Trinity Rail Express). While waiting for our return train, I took a few pictures that may be of interest:
This is some ballest - maybe a couple of years old

One of two freight trains coming thru the station

Part of a weather UP car

The second freight - BNSF

The signs say "no crossing".
For a touch of history - this Pennsylvania RR #4903, GG-1 Electric, built in 1940, pulled the funeral train of Senator Robert Kennedy from New York to Washington, DC on June 8, 1968.
It resides at the Museum of the American Railroad in Fair Park, Dallas.

Their website is: www.dallasrailwaymuseum.com
