Tyco/Mantua Big Steam on Parade! Three generations of T/M steam pose for this pic. Far right is a Santa Fe Mikado, with working headlight, circa early 70's. Middle is the famous Chessie Pacific, with no axle bearings! Amazingly, it can be tweaked to run very well anyway. Far left is a Mantua Erie Berkshire with can motor and Seuthe smoke unit, circa early '90's. Of course, Tyco steam dates back much further to units that had crystals as headlights, and metal vs. plastic tenders. However, all 3 examples shown have heavy die-cast boilers, and there's nothing like watching the beasts pound around the layout....stand back, protect the children, and make sure your rails are solidly anchored to the roadbed, because here they come!

These older Tyco/Mantua Mikado's are some of the best running steam engines in their price range, I have a few early T.Y.C.O. Mikado's & Pacific's with the early gear box drive & they run very smooth, at one time I had a 17' X 6' HO layout & a old Tyco Mikado actualy pulled over 50 cars, had to play with the cars to get them all at the right place with weight & etc but the mikado did pull all 50 some cars by it self, had to have a pair of Athearn SD-45's both powered to pull the same string of cars & if I remember correctly 3 Athearn GP-35's all powered to pull this string, everyone I am sure has a favorite Tyco or Mantua engine & am sure a favorite engine of any brand & might be interesting to hear of your favorite engine & maybe reason why, I like the Tyco Mikados because in the 60's my son & I put up this large HO layout along with a Auroa slot car track whch we spent a lot of time playing with in both racing slot cars & running trains, had fun getting gears changed on the slots & rewound armutures for more spped to try to beateach other & for some reason the Tyco Mikado steam engine always ran better tha the Athearn diesels, Penn line steamers & it was always dependable & ran very smooth & trouble free, of course the other Tyco diesels ran well but never as troubkle free as did this old Mikado, I still have it & if I get the chance will post a picture of it,................................................anyone else have a favorite engine & why ? This is a Mantua 4-6-4 I built from parts. I used a Pacific chassis with a Hudson/Berkshire trailing truck and a Mikado boiler.

I picked up this engine, new in box for $9.99. It is in pristine condition.
Talk about putting a smile on my face...
