I bought these today at an antique mall. They are mint and unused. Are these the original boxes? You can see the hand written labels. One says Tyco on the bottom and the other looks like the original mold was modified to remove the Tyco name. Both have plastic wheels and look identical to each other. Is this how they appeared in the set?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Alco Fan, those sure look like original boxes. I have a set from the '70's in Tyco boxes (#373A for the coaches). I've never seen them in Mantua boxes, but I'm sure someone can confirm here that they re-issued them after breaking away from Tyco. I'd like some more info. on this also--I had always assumed that they came out only around 74-76 or so. Chris

That style of Mantua package dates from their rebirth in 1977/78, thru the early-mid 80's. The only catalogs I have from that time are 1978 and 1981. The 1890 passenger cars are listed, but NOT in the So76 scheme.

Could be that it was offered in some year for which I don't have a catalog... or maybe even uncataloged, but I highly doubt they would have re-run the Tyco-branded So76 stuff on their own, so many years after the fact.

My suspicion is that someone swapped the Tyco So76 cars into the Mantua packages. The handwritten labels would play into that as well.

But, I could be wrong. You should email Tony Cook to be certain... he probably has the other catalogs. I will say the stock number 714-118 is curious. Don't know what "714" was supposed to be.

Nice find either way!

I agree that those cars were just swapped with the newer Mantua boxes and inserts.

Actually looks better in those boxes.
