Just got a couple of Tyco engines and I wanna make sure I don't kill them. I have a GP-20 and after I run it for a few mins, the light bulb makes the roof of the cab hot. Am I in danger of burning a hole in the roof or is this normal?

My diesel switcher doesn't run very smoothly when it's goin forward. It runs smoothly in reverse but makes a grinding noise when it's goin forward. Anyone got any ideas whats goin on in there???

All light bulbs normally give off a fair amount of heat. However, it should not be so hot as to cause harm to the plastic. A hot bulb could melt or warp the roof quite easily. I suggest you replace the bulb with a smaller one from Walthers. This will give you plenty of light with less heat. If you really want to go high tech, you could try an LED. They produce almost no heat. But both options will require some soldering of wires. If you can not replace it for a while, you can make a heat shield. Glue a piece of polished tin foil to the roof between it and the bulb. Make certain the polished side faces the bulb. This should reflect some of the heat away from the roof.
Another option is to remove the bulb and not replace it. I remove the lights from most of my locos.
Your switcher is a different story. What kind of motor does it have? Can you see if anything is rubbing? You may have something that is rubbing when the motor runs forward, but not backwards. Another posibility is that the motor needs to be rebuilt or replaced. In other words, this will be very hard to pin point without seeing the motor.

My switcher has a powertorque in it. If I could, I would take it apart and have a look inside, but its a transformer loco and its got a whole bunch of extra pieces. How do I open it??

Afraid I can not help you with opening the switcher. I have never seen that unit before. Can you post or send clear, closeup photos of the loco? Need to see underside and sides.

There are tabs on all for corners that must be released to remove the switcher's shell
You have to carefully pry the steps (ladders on the side) outward and slide the chassis out.

Ray is right... be warned that this is one of the toughest units to do. You might use a small screwdriver and pry out one corner, using the screwdriver to keep it loose... then do the opposite corner on the same end of the loco. With one end of the shell free, the other is easier to do. There are notches in the drive base to allow a small screwdriver to fit.

There were some screws in the bottom. Do these need to come off?? Are the couplers mounted to the shell or the chassis cuz they are sticking out through little slots in the shell.

I took the engine apart but do not see anything wrong. I put a picture in the photo gallery in my profile. If you can see anything wrong please let me know.
