I found this kit on eBay recently, and now I'm kicking myself for not bidding on it.

They copied the old American Flyer smoke-in-tender units, which had a motor driven piston for the chug sound effect and pumping the smoke. This would have been perfect for my Mantua Consolidation kit. [Oops!]

They claim the smoke and choo choo synchronizes with motion of the loco. How do they achieve this? Do these have motors, are they driven by the tender wheels, or what?

It can't really be synchronized, so I guess they mean that the chuff varies with the track voltage to the motor in the tender. Slightly deceptive advertising. [;)]

Yes, you can see a small square slot car type motor in the rear of the tender that drives a gear connected to the piston. The piston creates the chug, and forces smoke out of the smoke unit up to the stack, just like the old AF locos.

Not using Flyer's smoke-in-tender design. I guess I was hoping Mantua had introduced an improvement.
