Hello All--The set pictured below was given to me by a co-worker/friend. It had belonged to her father, but she had no attachment to it, and knew I would give it a good home. My questions: Can we narrow this down to a specific year? Considering the age of her father, I would say it might be late-50's. Also, the Borden's Cheese reefer is interesting in that it has metal, lithographed sides attached to the plastic body. Any info. on that? The set is called Mammoth of the Rails, #T5914, has a UP Mikado, Republic tank car, TH&B box, C&O gon., MKT stock, Borden's reefer, and lighted UP caboose. It came with track, and price on the box was $47.50. Thanks!

That is a nice set.[:p] Those steam engines can get pretty pricey on ebay, and you got it for free!?[:O]
On Tyco's older train sets, the first 2 numbers in the stock number were also the year it was made. They stopped doing this sometime in the late 60's...not sure when they started, but since your set is an early red box, I'm guessing it's numbered this way. So, if your set is # T5914, that means it was made in 1959.

| Thanks for the dating info...1959 would seem to fit perfectly. Does anyone have an example of a reefer with the tin sides? I'm curious as to what's under the tin, but I won't be taking it apart! I guess it's just a blank plastic body on to which different sides could be attached.

What a handsome set. I'd ask you to buy me lottery tickets if I played it. I wonder how many of us have been gifted with trains or sets from people outside our families. That's a gem. Congrats.

| Yes, I was very fortunate with this find! She told me she had some "old trains," and brought them to work. I went out to the car, she opened the trunk, and I saw the box....wow...then I opened it to find the steamer...couldn't have hoped for anything better. There was also another box (not pictured) that had the old track, and an ancient transformer, along with a few Athearn items (rubber-band drive F7, tank, and a couple of boxcars). I did tell her how these trains had some value-could be sold online, but I still received them. This set stays IN my house in the closet, not in the garage with the rest of the trains!

Congrats Adams!
A very nice set with some historical significance! Eric is correct in his dating this set, by using the stock number, to 1959. It is also proof that the Tyco red box era started in 1959, not 1960, as some elieve. HO Seeker has a 1959 Tyco brochure, listing this set, on his site at http://www.hoseeker.net/tycomiscellaneous.html
The refrigerator car, with it’s diecast frame, plastic body and lithographed on metal sides, was first cataloged in 1955. Priced at $3.95 it was offered in 3 road names. 313A Burlington (Yellow with Herald) 313B Crazy Crystals (Yellow) 313C Borden's (Red, White & Blue) In the 1956 catalog 3 additional names were added. 313D Pluto Water (White) 313E Land O'Lakes (Yellow) 313F Baby Ruth (Red) This car was also offered as a kit by Mantua for $1.98. Easy to build, the litho sides had tabs that utilized slots in the plastic body to hold them in place. 1959 was the last year of production of these little gems.
