I can't find either of my Athearn books but it seems to me one says the Santa-Fe style cupola caboose done in Boston & Maine to match the early Pacific is a piece that's extremely scarce and highly prized.
Well, I found one, so I'm wondering just what the story is on them. Can anyone quote what either Greenbergs or the Krause guide has to say about it, or speculate as to how correct they are?
I know neither book is 100% accurate, I've found a number of pieces not listed in either book over the years, both unlisted roadnames and error pieces. And some things are either more, or less, rare than they think too.

I missed your posting back in January. The B&M Caboose is hard to fine. When Athearn Stopped making the B&M Pacific steam engine they stopped making the caboose. I have a couple of them. The same holds true for a number of other engines and cabooses. The Brown Virginian Caboose is hard to fine also.

How bout 3 scarce Athearn cabs together? The B&M, the made for Lionel "Texas Special" and the hard to find brown Virginian cab. All 3 have had minor restoration work with the B&M cab having the most done. Larry

Apparently there is more than one shade of red for these rare cab's too - as evidenced here. I picked up the redder one in front last weekend at my local hobby store in the used bin (5 bucks). I just finished restoring it minus couplers. Larry

Was going though some items I remembered these Atlas Cabeese These were made by Athearn for Atlas Only. Were not part of the Normal Athearn Cataloged Items.... Kind of Plain, No Markings Just a Number. Available in Three Colors... From the style of Atlas Box.. Circa 1970's There were other Items made by Athearn for Atlas.. But, only these were made for Atlas only... Carl

I broke down and bought another copy of the Krause Athearn guide since I originally posted this. OP4 for both lighted and non-lighted versions of the B&M Caboose, although I think their ratings need an OP5 and OP6, with the lighted one being like an OP8. I've only ever run into one Athearn lighted caboose, in a set, and of course the people who had it left it out in the sun or something for that caboose and one of the cars to get warped pretty good. I just finally found a shell donor for that New Haven caboose.
As for the B&M caboose, I own every one I've ever seen, for a whopping total of three. I had a Virginian blue for a while, too, I bought that one so fast I didn't even notice the roof had a chunk out of the corner.

Here's 2 of 3 of the color variations of the Virginian Cab - dark blue (Lionel issue) and the Brown "tuscan". All the blue one needs is a smokejack. It came with its original Lionel box too.

Like the B&M caboose - im not surprised there were more than variation of the tuscan/brown ones. Athearn obviously changed paint colors a good bit. Larry
