Gentlemen:
Does anyone know how the firebox of an OIL burning steam engine differs from that of one which burns coal.
How is the oil in a tender transferred to a steam locomotive
Were coal fired steamers converted to Oil fired and if so, how???
Thanks, Gareth

Now I'm no expert on this but, On the outside, probably not much. I think there would be a drip pan instead of ash pans. I think there were steam lines that ran to the tender to preheat the oil, then the oil was pumped to the burner in the firebox. Locos were converted. Santa Fe retrofitted a lot of theirs. The coal bunker in the tender was converted to an oil tank and the burner put in the existing fire box. I'm not sure if I have any books with this info or not, I'll have to look.
