Hustlers and DD40's? That would give you, hmmmmmmmmm;
Perspective!!!???

Doesn't the DD40 Athearn have the wrong short hood? One from a DD35?

The 40 has the full width cowl doesn't it?

Check out the HO SEEKER site. Larry has put together a great site for Athearn research.
http://www.hoseeker.net/
This is the Athearn Gallery page.
http://hoseeker.net/swapgallery/maingallerypage

There are a few Athearn Yahoo groups too.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Athearn_model_trains/?yguid=190990278

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/athearnhocollectors/?yguid=190990278

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AthearnModelTrains/?yguid=190990278

There is a book on collecting Athearn that would be helpful.
I haven't bought one yet.
I am getting a decent collection of Athearn locos and rolling stock.
Nowhere near complete though.
I just bought a pair of Athearn 0-6-0 locos from the 60s to rebuild and add to the collection.

I have the book Ray mentioned. Its good for finding when things were made and what MIGHT be collectable. It does attempt to give the reader some idea of how rare something is. But the rarity scale is based on what the authors have seen or not seen available. So they may rate something as incredibly rare when it realy isn't. It also tries to cover errors in production, but again limited to what they have seen. But a good book to start with as long as you don't take everything as gospel!!

Fun stuff to say the least...as for the hood, I wouldn't know. I enjoy them for what they are---an eight axle beast just waiting to be unleashed. MU two and you have a 16 axle, four motor symphony waiting to tear the knuckles off of these wimpy $40 Kadee cars.[:D]

Is their such a thing as Athearn collectiables.
Their are some discontinued kits that could be.
Their are things Athearn made in dfferent road numbers.
Their are some thing that Athearn made for Lionel that also went into their catalog.
Who knows ?
If only they produced different paint skeems and road numbers each year and dated their products. But they didn't
Irv just made good HO trains.

Hmm...

That is a intersting statement, it all depends on your interests. I collect almost anything that I like. I happen to like some older Tyco and almost all Athearn. I was not a fan of the newer Athearn but yesturday I just won my first Genesis loco. I am trying it out, I may like I may not I did the same thing with a Proto 2000 loco and I will never buy one again. As for older Athearn I would say that when a boxcar sold for 2.98 new and now is selling for around 40.00 it is collectiable or at leasts desired by a few people. I would say Athearn is about as collectiable as any other brand of trains out there. I personally seek out the Athearn GP-30, there is not many that make it past me on eBay. If you want one and see it on eBay let me know so I did not bid against you... :)

One of my hobby dealers is/was giving away 2000-2001 Buyer's Guide.

I took one.

Is this something you are looking for?

I don't know of anything that was 2.98 and sold for 40. Except in cases where uninformed people made purchases due to a precieved need. All 2.98 items were cars. Even the older passemger cars that were 2.98 can be gotten at shows for 5 to 8 bucks. Freight cars at 4 each, 3 for 10 and cheeper. Those are the prices I pay at shows for old athearn. Athearn made for lionel sells higher. Even at this I am paying more that the original purchase price but I realise that the cost of manufacturing new is even higher. 2.98 cars are now 10 to 20. It has little to do with collectiability.

I forget the name of the company, International Mining or something like that, but it's shown in both the Greenberg and Krause guides... apparently only two or three sets are known to exist. Everything was done in the company's colors - green and yellow GP9, boxcar, tank car, maybe a couple other cars, and a caboose. Done in the 60s. Different colors than the Reading GP30, too, no mistaking one for the other. I'd say if you came up with a mint in the box set and put it on eBay, it would bring enough to buy a new car - and a fairly expensive one at that.

I've run into some other custom run cars, I've sold a couple of Tyco custom runs and I still have a Varney bay-window in an uncataloged road name, but the Athearn special runs, other than the ones they did for Lionel, are pretty scarce.

Oh you mean this one? International Minerals and Chemical. From my collection. Working on restoring to better than new appearence. These came with horn-hook couplers and horns only. I have handrails ( to be painted) and airtanks coming.

well I found a UP F7 A & B rubberband drive one for $5 Anyone got a truck for the B unit?

oh did these come with lights or not? Is there a way to repower these without the rubberband drives?
I think these will look cool running with the Tyco UP passenger cars IF I can find the other 2

Athearn SPECIAL 40' box cars.
Back in the late 1950's and early 1960's Athearn added to it 40' box cars a group of SPECIAL car with nicer paint schemes. Then the regular 40' box cars list price was $1.98 . These specials had a price of $2.25 . There were 9 of them. There stock numbers were a continuation of the regular 40' box cars. The number sequence started with 2225 and ended with 2233 . From 25 down was the " B&O timesaver ', " Mopac Eagle ", State of Main ", "Monon ", Timken Roller Bearings ", " Central of Georgia ( Blimp )", " Wabash ", " NYC Pacemaker ", " M&St L ".
