Tony has a picture of the Santa Fe Consolidation Steam engine pictured in the 1973-74 TYCO catalog. http://tycotrain.tripod.com/steamengines/id2.html
Here is the actual engine used for the catalog shoot in '73 and later mounted on a display. /tyco/forum/uploaded/tyco_prototypes/slot cars 183.jpgTelltale signs of the engine being identical are there as in a piece of the tender step missing on both. -Bob

Not only that, but the handpainted letter "a" 's in "Santa" do not match each other on the example... but are a perfect match to the inconsistent pair in the photo.

Very cool!

Looks like it lost the trailing tender truck sideframe sometime between posing and mounting, though. That's a common problem with the tender drive.

Is the locomotive metal or plastic?
I see some differences in it opposed to the production models and wonder if it was a Mantua locomotive they used.
Notice the Valve gear hanger is missing the Crosshead guide hangers, the steps and part of the running boards aren't there ( the notches for them in the Cylinder block aren't there either) and the pilot is moved back (where it should be)
I like it.

Ray, The engine is metal with some plastic pieces on it. The metal piping and lines are all added on with much detail. The one I have had them painted or felt tip markered to darken them but a finger nail removes this for a nice shiny piping look. The tender coal load is fabricated in a couple of pieces. -Bob

I didn't notice the tender modifications untill you mentioned it.
I would have loved having a job like that. Kit-bashing locomotives and getting paid for it.
