Hi Guys:
Does anyone have one of the more recent C-628's marketed by IHC with the can motor, flywheel and 12 wheel drive? I think it's made by Mehano.
I'm surious how it runs and any thoughts on it!?
Thanks, Gareth

Hey Romcat,
I have one of those! It runs very well indeed. It is very much improved in terms of the mechanism. It has a can motor, single fly wheel, 12 wheel drive and 8 wheel current pick-up. The only problem I felt needed to be corrected was the wieght. It just seems to be a bit too lite. I added a couple ounces of extra wieght which improved pulling power.
The exterior is unchanged from the older AHM/Life-Like/Model Power versions. These were all made by Mehano over the years.

Hi Hypoponera:
How would you rate the look of the shell? I don't mean rivet count exact, but rather just decent looking, say compared toa Tyco C-630 or 430?

The shell looks fine with the exception of the handrails. The cast plastic handrails are too thick. But otherwise, it looks OK. The shell represents an early to mid- production model without dynamic brakes. And the handrails can be replaced with bent brass wire should you so desire.
I use this shell with parts of the Tyco C630 and IHC C430 to kitbash other versions. By combinding shell parts, it is possible to make a low nosed C630 or a hi nosed C628. You can take the D.B. vents from the C630 and put them on the C628 as well. Just use the C628 chassie and trucks as the base.

Those sound like some interesting kit-bashes Mike. I have 3 of the old AHM C628s that are stripped and waiting to be detailed. I may try a few of those ideas.

Hey Ray,
Alas, I can not take much credit for the kit-bash ideas. I found several articles in back issues of MR and RMC mags. Need some articles? I can scan and email them to you. I think there are 2 articles on making a hi hooded C628 ala N+W and C+NW. There are also 2 on making the lo nosed C630. Each is a very different method. I just took what I thought was the best of each and combined methods as needed. There is also an article on putting the FM Train MAster trucks under a C630 for N+W. Now I just need 4 of the plastic truck holding clips to hold the trucks to the frame. Don't suppose you have a couple to spare do you?

Hey:
Sadly no on the trucks. I have the one Athearn Trainmaster in CNJ Green which is an `Omage to my days living in NJ. God I miss New Jersey![V] sniff! Can't believe I said that. I have two extra shells for it, one I hope to paint in the "Demo" colours ever see that? and the other in PRR for the operational side of my model railroading...
I'll take any KB articles scans you have by the way locomotive wise. I have one of my favourite all time KB project a Roundhouse Box cab to Vest-Pocket Turbine from 1977 RMC if you want that!?

Gareth,
PM me your email and I will scan and send those articles tomorrow. But be warned, after reading them, you may find yourself buying a couple C628s! These KB projects are not too hard.
Thanks for looking for those clips! I have a hi hood C628 and a lo nosed C630 that are waiting for those clips. Once I have them, these rebuilds will be ready to fire up!
Yes, I have seen the demo Train Masters! I love the locos made by FM. I have several old Athearn Train Masters. I have even chopped one down to an H16-66 "Baby Train Master". I do have a TM in PRR, #8703.[;)]
I do not need that article. But thanks anyway! Alas, I lost the MDC boxcab I was bidding on at evilbay. Had I won that, then I would have been able to use that article. But I will keep in mind just in case I do get a boxcab! Mike

Hi:
email is jgedwards@gmail.com by all means fire it along. I love high-hood Alco's!
Have you looked at the Bowser all Metal H-16-44!? Fits on an Athearn chassis amongst others. Makes a nice BTM.

I hope to do a couple of box cab KB's. One like my Avatar and another as the Vest-Pocket Turbine, so yeah if you get one, Let me know!

I also have a book by Ron LaFever about how to make the chassis unbelievable. He sells it on EB for about $12.00. I have the last Chassis he built for commercial sale. The book is all about it.

I have never seen a Bowser H16-44 in person. Have seen a few photos though. I have 4 of the Bachmann H16-44s. They run and look great! I belive some where even used in NJ. But, both Bachmann and Bowser have made the same mistake. They have the wrong name! The real "Baby TM" had 6 axles, not 4! I don't think the H16-44 had an "official" nickname.
I will try to get those articles sent tommorow. I have VERY slow dial-up and may fall asleep while doing the sending!

I think I have one of the articles on making a high hood C628 but not the low nose C630 or FM truck swap articles. I'll look to see if I have the clips.

Ray,
Send me your email and I will rifle those articles to you. Well, maybe rifle isn't the correct term. How about have them crawl to you. I think it took almost 45 mins for me to send them to romcat!

Hey Hypoponera:
Can you place your IHC C-628 alongside a Tyco C-630 for me and tell me how they match up length-wise. I want to see if I can get a Tyco 630 shell on an IHC C-628 Chassis. I know the Stewart one works but it's too pricey!
Thanks, G.

Look in the Kitbashing section. I have posted some photos of a Tyco shell mounted onto the C628 frame. I cut the walk ways and pilots off of the C630. The fit is just a little tight. The lengths worked out well enough for me. I think I even showed a close up where the worst fit area was. That was the front steps to the cab.
One of the articles I sent to you has another way of doing it. He left the Tyco shell unaltered and cut the C628 frame down to fit. Its the article on the C+NW locos.
