Fellows,
Has anyone tried to use cut down brushes and springs from older Athearn engines to replace worn units in our Tycos?

Alco Fan,
I have not tried to use Athearn brushes or springs in a PT. But I did find these on ebay today:
http://cgi.ebay.com/GP40-BACHMANN-HO-SCALE-MOTOR-BRUSH-AND-SPRING-KIT_W0QQitemZ330096985242QQcategoryZ19132QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
They are for the old Bachmann power truck. They might fit without too much trouble.

Carl,
Sorry to say, the only easy way is to grow another set of hands. You could try Scotch tape to hold the brush, spring and contact in place while setting the screw. But I have stilled wished for the spare hands to do that as well.

Well I am at the absolute highest level of frustration right now!!!![:(!]
Now there is one less PT powered Tyco piece of crap in this world.
Having thrown my newly purchased Chatt GP20 off the deck of my house.
I actually feel better now having done that.
I might run whats left of it over with the lawnmower tomorow.
Looks like I will only but MU-2 engines from now on!

Carl,

Save the GP20 shell and fuel tank. You can mount the MU-2 in it. I have seen the MU-2 for sale on ebay. Who knows, I might have one floating around here. I feel your pain though! The PT motor is crap! Even if you can put it back together. I only use the Tyco GP20 and C630 shells for rebuild projects. I have not been too pleased with either the PT or the MU-2 motors.
