Well I was helping my Dad clean out his storage building last weekend and ran across an old train set I had when I was a kid. This thing is probably about 30 yrs old. Its obviously missing pieces but I think most of the cars are there. I was just wondering if there was some place I could look up what its value may be. I'm not going to sell this I have a 3 yr old little boy who would love to have it one day. The engine is a blue and yellow GP20 Santa Fe. The number on its box is 228B1400. If any of you experts could help me out that would be great. I would just like to know what I have.

| Thanks for that info. That is exactly what I have but was wondering if these old trains have increased in there worth. I'm a complete newb when it comes to this and haven't researched anything except for yesterday. And found this site. I guess my question is; do I have something that is worth some money or is it mainly something I can share with my boy. Is this something that would need to be put up until he is older and can appretiate this old train. I would hate to try and put this together for him and he accidently damages an expensive train set. I know nothing about this old train except for the fact I used to love watching it run around its track. The engine may not even run anymore.

The particular loco you have is not very rare and is very easily had; I just got one from an ebay seller for the princely sum of $5. So feel free to enjoy it the way it was meant to be. And the good news is that if it doesn't work... repairs (a new one or parts) won't be hard to obtain.
Most Tyco trains are not worth much as a general rule. There are the random pieces and variants that do generate interest, and some that can be considered rare and/or expensive... but enough time spent here and at Tony Cook's resource site should clue you to what those are.
