Was trolling on ebay and I came across a near-MIB GI Joe set:

http://cgi.ebay.com/TYCO-G-I-JOE-ELECTRIC-TRAIN-BATTLE-SET-UNUSED-BUT_W0QQitemZ290036870673QQihZ019QQcategoryZ19140QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

What's interesting is the Diesel switcher: Huge cartoony cab, handrails, wierd little wheels. Doesn't look at all like the Diesel Switcher we all know and loathe, nor that I had in my set. Not even sure a powertorque is in that guy.

Anybody know where it came from?

I took a look at the link you posted. I found a second ebay auction with the same design of switcher as the one you mentioned. My guess would be tyco made a second design of their switcher for some of the G.I. joe sets. On the picture in the tyco resouce page, the switcher looks like it was made of thicker plastic. Maybe they made a second, cheaper switcher to save money on some of their sets.

You're probably right that it was a substitution... that set was generally popular. But as bad as Tyco's standard Diesel Switcher was... that subsituted one looks even worse and unfamiliar. And the drive's wheelbase looks too short for a PowerTorque... which is really what I'm intrigued about. I mean, I doubt Tyco would have adopted the expense of a new drive parts stock and support, but you never know...

That looks like the AHM GE 35 ton switcher.

Hi Ray. Your right. The GI Joe engine was made in Yugoslavia by the same company that made AHM engines. I have an engine somewhere But, I remember it being the same. Carl

I was just lookin at some of the pics of these sets on Ebay and I noticed something. In the bottom right hand corner of the box there is a yellow square with a picture of the train and the different accessories it comes with. The picture of the train shows it with the wierd switcher that Goinincirclez was talkin about. In the big picture on the front of the box, it shows it with the other kind. Did Tyco put these engines in their GI Joe set in 1985???

It is highly possible that the locos were changed in mid production. I had (I painted it) a Plymouth switcher in olive drab with the power torque drive.
