Virginian GP-20 pre-production model. I do not see any mention in the TYCO Resource for this as a brown box or red box era engine. -Bob

HEY! I have one of these too. I bought it on ebay from a guy who said it was a Tyco prototype. Does yours have any lettering on the other side? Mine doesn't.

Here's a current pic of this GP20, trying to compare the paint colors to the regular production C430's. The GP20 colors look like an exact match to the middle C430. I added the handrails.

Now that I look at the pictures, I think the camera flash blends the blues on all three units together to look the same. The GP20 blue is a dead on match for the Tyco caboose and later VGN C430's. The earlier narrow blue band VGN Alco has a lighter color blue.

The odd cab number is a head scratcher considering 5628 was always the GP20 road number for decades by the time this sample was made. I think the nose decal is neat. While the earlier Virginian Alco had a VGN logo, someone liked the stripes in planning stages, and it stuck into production. Somehow Lionel collectors have tracked down how things like this took place. It's too bad that Tyco collectors will always end up guessing after all this time that's gone by.

For the GP20's, 5625, 5626, 5627, and 5628 were the GM GP20 Demonstrator numbers on the first GP20's. TYCO used 5628 throughout all their GP20's.

The C430's Demonstrators, 3 of them as well, were 430-1, 430-2, 430-3.

okay, this is too addicting... my 3:25a.m. and about 10 entries so far.

G'night.

John

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out.

Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

Here's something of interest I just noticed. From Tony Cook's site
http://www.ho-scaletrains.net/tycobrownboxdiesels/id8.html

"The 1985 catalog finds a Virginian C430 carrying the cab number 4301, typical of TYCO's C430 models, but no nose chevrons and no VGN circle herald. This example may be seen powering TYCO's Super RailMaster (No.7426) train set in '85, though later in the catalog in the Diesel Locomotives section you'll find the model with the 1435 cab number."

So I wonder if this GP20 was proposed around 1985, and both units were given the 1435 road number as pre-production mock ups? Odd that neither the Tyco GP20 or C430 ever wore this number as a production unit. It's also interesting that the blue matches the other unit.
