My Dash started to run the opposite direction. Now it ether is pushing against my Gp-40 or it pulling it around or pulling it around. I'm stumped on what cased it to do this. Any help would be appreciated.

Have you done any work on this loco? Sounds like something was removed and then put back backwards. If you removed the trucks and then put the front truck in the back and the back one in the front, your loco will run backwards. Also, if you removed the motor and rotated it 180degrees, it will run backwards.
Another possibility is that you have reversed something on the GP40. That is if it is also an Athearn.
Can you post a photo of the Dash-9 mechanism?

I did the motor tuning that I read from this site http://www.mcor-nmra.org/Publications/Articles/Athearn_TuneUp.html
the motor is back in the same way it came out, and when I work on the trucks I do them one at a time so they don't get switched.

Hey Dan:
Shouldn't the "top strap" be under the right side truck conducting hook? It look like the right side is not getting proper contact.
Don't know how that relates to the reversal problem though???

OK Dan,
Your photos have eliminated the easy things. Your components are in the right places and correct orientation.
Place your loco on a long, straight, piece of track. Place the electrodes of a 9-volt battery on the track behind the loco. Place the smaller, positive electrode on the right rail. Place the larger, negative electrode on the left rail. Your loco should run forward. If it does, your loco is fine and the problem is somewhere else.
If the loco moves backwards, your motor has a problem. When tuning your motor, did you remove the motor magnets? If so, you may have replaced them in the wrong orientation. You can tear the motor down and flip the magnets. OR, just rotate the motor 180 degrees on the frame. It will still run the "wrong way", but the loco will run the correct direction.

I've had this happen and it was due to not putting the magnets back in the correct orientation. (top magnet to the bottom and bottom magnet to the top)

Hi Dan:
Athearn actually calls it the "Motor connecting clip" See this diagram:

Dan, Glad to hear the loco is running the right direction again. I noticed that the tune-up link failed to mention replacing the magnets. Next time you tear down that motor, mark the magnets "top" and "bottom" as well as front and rear. Will save you alot of head scratching!
