I spent yesterday working on my powered Tyco ACL F7. Now I'm onto the matching dummy unit. The front coupler is broken, and its held in by a pin. How do I remove the pin to replace the coupler???

Hey Cheez:

Brass pin? Like on an MU-2 Locomotive? The plate can be pryed up remvoving the pin, or if you have a small eneough drift it can be tapped out. I'd take the truck off the locomotive!

I would try very carefully with a very small flathead screwdriver or similar blade to get under the 'head' of the pin, and try to pry straight up. I suppose if the pin did break, you could drill it out, and replace with another pin, or a screw. Getting the blade between the coupler and the mounting post instead of between the pin head and the coupler might help some in not breaking the pin. Just my thoughts....

Romcat, we may need some clarification as to the F-unit's setup. All of mine have body-mounted couplers in the front, held in by a plastic pin. The rear truck is the one with a truck-mounted coupler. Mine are mostly older, red-boxes, though.

Its got a large silver pin. The coupler is mounted straight onto the body and the sticks through a slot in the front. I've tried prying with a screwdriver...didn't seem to do much. The pins in there good. I might try some oil or something. I'll get it eventually...was just wondering if anyone knew any special tricks.

Cheez,
Try holding a hot soldering iron to the metal pin for a few seconds.
This will soften the plastic holding the pin in and allow you to remove the pin.
Just be very careful not to touch the plastic pilot,or hold the iron on there too long.

I managed to get it out last night. I used a pair of pliers and pulled it out. I found out that the coupler was not broken, but the little wire used to make it spring back had slipped off. I was too lazy to bother with the wire (plus it flew away) so I just put a standard horn hook in.
