I am not much of a TYCO modeler but people know I am into trains and keep giving me their old TYCO trains. Okay, I'll play.

What can I do to fix all of the old Tyco drives without spending a fortune on the locomotives? I have several Atlas made Alco C420s and do not really need the Tyco version. BUT... I wouldn't mind trying to fix it up a little bit. So, how do I do that? That pancake motor with direct drive is really not conducive to replacing it with a can motor. So, what does everyone do?

I have found the C430 is close to an Athearn U30B in length. If you want a quick and dirty fix, it's close enough that you can use long shank couplers on the Athearn frame and use it without too many modifications. You'll need to find a donor unit with the flat side motor, and you'll need to remove everything below the walkway sill on the Tyco shell. There is some minor chiselling inside the Tyco shell to get a good fit, but it's a project you can do in an evening.

If you want to keep what you’ve got, there are online videos that show how to service and repair Tyco power trucks.  It you’re the least bit mechanically inclined, it isn’t difficult.

I was thinking of the immortal words of Socrates, who said, "... I drank what?"
