I picked up a Tyco display case this weekend:

It’s not perfect, but they aren’t the most common thing either.

Those can be built if you are carpentry savvy. Looks like three foot flex track length. And the Tyco signs can be reprinted.

Nice score. Now you just need all the locomotives to match the names on the shelves! (Or do you?)

Broken corner:
I think I can glue this back on.
Detached door track:
 Should be an easy fix.
$50

That is awesome! I have been looking for one for years! I believe there is a larger one that has three engines per shelf and had doors on the bottom front. When I was a kid in the sixth grade the local train store by me (World of Trains in Forest Hills, NY) had the display case it by the door. I remember wanting the E-7 UP City of San Francisco that was in the case. It took me over two months to save up for it. I went in and asked for it. Leon (the owner) told me he was sold out and wasn't sure when he would have one in. I remember turning around and walking slowly to the door and tearing up and sniffling lol. Leon heard me and said "Hey kid if it means that much to you I can sell you the one in the display but i don't have a box for it". Of course I took it lol. Still have it - it runs great. A very treasured piece for me. I became friends with Leon as I got older. I frequented the shop over the years - I grew up and eventually moved out to Long Island but always made sure when I went to my parents house I stopped in the shop. Sometime in the mid 2000's I stopped in and saw a different gentleman behind the counter. I asked him if Leon was in and he said no. After talking with the gentleman for a while I found out he was his ownership partner Bill and he was never really in the shop, and he was closing the store because Leon had passed away. I was shocked - I had seen Leon two months before and he looked good. Bill then asked me if I was interested he would let me go into the basement storage and pick out things if I wanted and he would give me a good price. I came back a week later - expecting to not see much as over the years they had split the shop into trains and antiques. I was shocked at what they had - vintage Tyco, Bachmann, AHM etc. Just about all manufacturers from the 70's and 80's was down there and most brand new. Engines, cars, scenery, sets. I asked Bill why this stuff was not on the floor over the years -he said he didn't know. I bought so much I filled up my GMC S-15 Jimmy and had to come back the next day with my Express van. He made me a really cheap offer - I believe he wanted to just get rid of everything. When I was leaving the first day Bill said to me he was glad the trains were going to someone who appreciates them and he was sure Leon was too. Such a crazy but sad (for me) story. I do have another story like that but I'll save that for another time

Great memories. I remembered World of Trains. Was on Woodhaven Blvd by 63 Road. Later he moved to Metropolitan Avenue by 71 Avenue. Became an antique store later. Gone now as far as I know.

It was great wks. I went to school across the street from when they were at Woodhaven and 63rd Road. I would stop in at least twice a week on my way home.

Any chance you'd provide the dimensions? Also how is the formed sheet metal attached to the side frame?

Tom, I’ll try to take measurements and look at the shelf mounting sometime soon.  I do remember though, that it is about 24” wide and 18” deep, because I had to make room for it in the car when I got it.

Thanks, as that explains how the engines & cars didn't cause the display to collapse. Plus, I've never seen the inside of the case where the steps attach. This would be a very interesting DIY project.

According to Worthpoint internet collectors site.
TYCO Precision Engineered Locomotives The Standard of Quality for 50 Years Tyco Locomotives counter display case is in great vintage condition with minor imperfections in wood
Minimal scratches on plexiglass front cover. Plexiglass does not have any cracks! Case has four tiered metal shelves for viewing items, a plexiglass latching cover and sliding doors on back with three interior shelves for product storage.
Display case outside measurements are:
17 1/4" Depth 30" Length 18" Width.
Tiered shelf's measurements are: 28" Length & 2 1/2" Width. The shelf is almost 50 pounds

Hopefully you can replicate it as well as the original.

From what I've seen, there are 3 different variants of the display case. Dimensions and materials could be different for each variant, but good to know the above.
