I call this one project devo! I have taken a f1st generation proto 2000 FA2 back to its Athearn roots! Why would I do somthing like that? well, its not like the 1st generation proto 2000 locomotives were all that great. they were an improvement over the Athearn but not by much. For one thing, the useless flywheel driven fan, that you cant even see when the train is moving, takes off more power then its worth. Also the wiring makes doing major work to the motor a challenge and does not do much else. The main thing i did besides removing the rear fan mount, was to install an Athearn motor lower contact plate inplace of the one that came with the proto unit, reasemble the hole thing with the addition of an Atheran power connector and presto! instant devo!
