In the Trailer Jet article, I pointed out the variations in some of the flat cars whereby most have the "ATSF 90806" plus a bunch of data.... but some others just have the reporting marks. At the time I didn't know why that was, but suspected the marks-only versions were early production runs. Turns out I was right:
I don't have the exact time frame on this one, but that is the traditional skid flat with a standard wood deck. I do know these are early redbox, as later on they get the plastic chassis (this one is metal) and the deck for the pipes. But the ATSF decoration is exactly the same as that applied to the early 50-foot flat cars. Tyco obviously added the extra data to those to fill out the carsides a little better.
Of course, if they were gonna go through the trouble to do that, they should have changed the road number altogether. OH! They did! They flipped it upside-down [:P]

OK so now I feel like an idiot for not catching that one. I'll have to go look and see how many I have with the upside down numbers. sheesh In Malfunction Junction: When all else fails get a bigger hammer.
