Hey Guys:

Does anyone know what holds the clamshell doors shut on the Virginnia operating Hopper?

Thanks,
G.

Good ol' gravity. They are basically attached in a free-swinging, hinged / pivot fashion. If you tilt the car side to side, the bulk of the doors is such that they always tend to hang straight down, like a pendulum.

I believe they are pushed open by a special ramp in the track, but someone else will need to confirm. I have 6 of the cars but no track.

Tony, you are right about the special track to unload the hopper.
It uses a wedge type thingy to spread open the hopper doors.

Here are complete set contents of the TYCO #862 Hopper Car unloading set. The track piece interestingly is made by atlas in this set. I have several others-- mint in box with plastic wrapping-- that i will open one to see if contains atlas operating track piece. The track is a 6 inch snap piece that has center cut out for operating door mechanism. The mechanism snaps out-could be used on code 83 possibly-

Clammed doors... Yes, Gravity... Thanks to Sir Issac Newton.

ZZZzzz (a.k.a. John)

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out.

Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?
