Went to the DuPage County Il. annual all night rummage sale last night and made this great score. Guy had this box with what turned out to be two brass steamers. The Overland 2-4-2 is in pieces and is missing at least a few parts. The 2-8-0 Colorado Midland I believe is a "Hallmark" model and is complete and it does run. When I asked 'How much?' That would be $80 but everything is half price, so $40! SOLD! Anyone know where to find instructions to put the 2-8-0 back into running condition?

The 2-8-0 is MDC Roundhouse Old Timer Series. There have been some modifications to it. The ones with the screws in the crank pins only picked up electricity on the flanged drivers, but you can see that the past owner has added pickup wipers to the blind drivers, so all drivers on the right side are picking up. Behind the flanged drivers, there are little plunger-like contacts mounted in grooves in the frame and riding the inside of the tire.

Newer versions of the same thing have metal wheels on the right side conducting current from all four drivers, and plastic ones on the left insulating the tire from the axle. The crank pins on the newer ones are Delrin plastic press fitted into the wheels.

Aside from that difference in electrical pickup, the old ones like you have are pretty much like the newer ones in design.

If you have the patience to bear with a fairly slow presentation, this guy assembles one with the plastic crank pins. This should tell you what's on the inside and what makes it tick.
