Hey Gents:
Been pre-Occupupied lately and Ray, Bless him has picked up the slack!
For this week I have begun thanks to some guys who have posted Steam units here been developing an itch and I have begun to scratch it! I don't have a decent pic of my prety CNR Hudson, but I just bought and when I get back from NY will pick-up a rather old Tyco 4-6-2 Pacific. These apparently are very nice runners and I thought would be a good guinea pig for tuning and weathering! Anyway here is the sellers pic:

I will probably try wiring in the Pilot as well as the tender. Have to see what can be done.
Been reflecting recently with GIC about changing my buying (read Ebay) habits and beginning to concentrate on getting a layout done, a simple one just to run things and doing some kitbashing stuff.
Anyway, get your lokies up guys! And tell us about them!

I can vouch for the satisfaction that can come from a simple loop---or, in my case four---to run your beasties on. It's short on scenery but long on entertainment. The upper loop, though tight at 14" radius, can handle moste Athearn 4 axle units.

My lokey of the week is an Athearn DD40 dually. I have two of them, purchased at a swap meet. They have NWSL NS wheelsets interspersed with the Athearn ones for electrical pickup and traction. I plan to run them as a AA set, eventually equipping them with four sound chips and full lighting.

This is a Mantua/Tyco Pacific I rebuilt. A little extra detail was added to the boiler, a new pilot added and has a kitbashed tender.

Hi Ray:
Did you put a "Vanny" tank on the Tyco's original frame?
How's it run btw? I just won one in an auction?

sorry, don't have a smaller version uploaded at the moment. But here's my eye-curdling contribution.

That disco-clash of color is a customized Tyco E7, made to represent the Rock's infamous Bicentennial E8 #652. I did not do this conversion but had been contemplating doing my own decals to use on a proto 2K unit, so when this turned up on ebay I figured it would make a good reference.
It is not 100% accurate but gets the overall feel down. The real Rock Island did not paint a Bicentennial unit on its own, so the 20th Century Railroad Club (railfans) in Chicago did them the "favor" of designing and painting this livery. The real unit lasted in these colors through shutdown in 1980.
(fun fact: The Rock did in fact create a second, "unofficial" Bicentennial in this same livery, when they shopped a pair of wrecked GP40's. They grafted a Blue & White cab and nose onto a red long hood. Only the Rock!)
Someone did a fair amount of work to the Tyco shell, filling in the windows and pilot. The masking job for the star on the nose is excellent. But the shell is still off, they originally left the Vampire trucks in place (I swapped for the EMDs shown) and the "Independence" letters are vinyl stickers, painstakingly aligned!
Truly an interesting kitbash of an interesting loco with an... interesting... paint scheme.

Here's a link to some photos and discriptions of the rebuild http://2guyz.info/Forums/viewtopic/t=3031.html It is a Tyco/Mantua tender frame. It runs great, however I did do quite a bit of modifications. The stock locos don't run bad if tuned properly.

Nice Rock collection, there...
I'm impressed with that E-unit. Interesting enough, the CRIP paint scheme changes basically followed its financial condition. Black, for starters... all seems well. Orange... start of some problems... Red... uh oh... beaurcratic interferences with slagging tape with matching color... Blues... Eventual solvent market description of finances... why, even the older wooden m.o.w. rollingstock got this new, bright... wasted paint job.
Any condolences from the other absorbing railroads? Not!
John
I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

OK, so I think I figured out the photo thing...

This old Athearn SW1500 is the only surviving loco from my childhood. The caboose attached is the only surviving piece of rolling stock.
I either got them for Christmas when I was 6 or for my birthday when I was 7. My parents had them custom made at some long forgotten hobby shop on Torrence Ave. in Chicago. Thanks to a 1986 move to South Florida - land of no basements - everything got sold off at our moving sale.
Enjoy...
