Another Ephrata Valley Railroad EMD diesel compilation, featuring: DD35A #3500, GP38-2 (dummy) #1503, and Reading RR GP38-2 #3412 pulling a string of coal hoppers on the outer line, EV "YellowJacket" GP38 #1501 pulling the "Ephrata Flyer Combined" on the inner line, and GP38-2 high-hood #1524 pulling a few Spartan Tire Company box cars.

Awesome layout ! Very nice video.
How do you run three diesels on the same train without any issue ? No loco runs the same way.

The Athearn DD40 is a powered locomotive, and a very powerful HO locomotive at that, while the two Life-Like GP38's are non-powered, so they trail fairly good. RP and I once did a test with the DD40, where we pulled like five dummy locomotives around his layout with it.

That Athearn DD40, along with the PA1, makes a great track tester. With those stiff, long wheelbase trucks, it will find any flaws in your trackwork. If I can get mine to run laps without any derailments, I know my track is perfect. If not, I find out where it derails and fix the problems.

Yeah, we were using it to test the confines of RP's mountain tunnel. It's tight but it clears it. Now I just hope the Jordan Spreader I'm building for him will clear it.

You can run multiple powered locomotives on your track at the same time if they are speed matched. I commonly run two at a time, sometimes three on my trains if their motors don't draw too many amps. I've done as many as six before.
They don't have to be perfectly matched either, but do need to be fairly close. When doing so, configure them with the fastest loco is the lead loco.

EDIT: One issue on multi-unit running I did not mention are locomotives equipped with traction tires, which in some cases may cause the locos to "fight" with each other a bit. I have experimented with converting one unit to have no traction tires, it seemed to solve the fighting.

| Most people I know run multiple locomotives. ON my and My dad's layouts running more than one unit is a must on long trains. Steep grades and sharp curves means a 20 car coal train needs 4 units to get over the mountain on my dad's layout. Two on the front and a two unit helper on the rear. He's been running that way for 30-40 years, long before DCC made it easy.
