A pair of Mehano SD-40s lettered SHOP ‘n SAVE.  I’ve never seen a Shop ‘n Save promotional set before, and I’m not familiar with the store chain either. so I had to have these:

SHop n Save is a grocery store chain in Pittsburgh. I remember seeing these sets in the stores about 10 years ago selling for some rediculously low price like $25. I passed on it because it was Mehano. Had it been Bachmann I'd definitely have gotten one.

Chops, judging by the windshields, etc. that locomotive looks like it came through a severe sandstorm!

Thanks for the store info, jward.
You know, Bachmann was selling some Mehano-made stuff back in the '90s; if the set had been Bachmann, it might still have been Mehano...maybe...

I've seen the Mehano GP18s sold under the Bachmann name. I find that interesting as Bachmann is Kader, a Hong Kong based manufacturer who has made most of the Bachmann line as well as stuff cfor many others. There has to be an interesting story behind the Bachmann GP18s, Given the timeframe in which they appear to have been produced, I wonder if the war in Bosnia in the early 1990s has anything to do with it. I think I heard somewhere that Mehano's factory was bombed. Maybe, they subcontracted production to Kader in order to stay in business and the Bachmann GP18 was part of the deal they worked out?
