HI im new here!
Back in 1989 I retund from a weekend at my grandparents home to find a magazen add placed in very easy site. It anncoed "All abord the tropicana express!" I was asked by my Dad if I was intersted and, needless to say, I was! To get the set all we had to do was send in a few Tropicana UPC's and send them and a nominal shipping fee along with the coupon in, im not sure just ware, and in a few weeks the set show up. It had an EMD GP locomotive In CSX steth gray, two Tropicana orage box cars and a conraill cobose. The set inculded a track layout tressle system of some sort, cant remeber if it was an over/under or a figure eight. the set was neverassembled in its defult set up. It was, insted, made part of a large Christmas laout that year. I still have the box cars, the Locomotive bit the dust early, having been equipt with life-like's first generation pancake motor. The cobose is in a few pecies but Im tempted to reasimble it.
Just interested if anyone got one of these sets that year.

I have seen the set before. Its pretty neat from all the pictures I have seen of it but have never examined one in person. The CSX GP-38-2 that came with alot of the promotional sets was never sold individualy that I am aware of. Do you remember which year the set was offered? Would be pretty cool to see the add in the magazine for the offering.

Now that I think of it, it was more like thoes adds you get from stores or supper markets that give you cuopons on certen items. Im pritty sure that this was in 1989.

I see the real thing everyday around 11:00 in the morning here in Cincinnati. Usually 2 CSX GP-38's and 10 or 20 Tropicana refrigerated boxcars.

alcopj mentioned 1989 regarding the year of issue for the Tropicana set in question. There could easily have been more than one offer for this set. I believe we are talking about a Life-Like promotional set.

I have the following CSX GP38-2 picture and it was part of a Tropicana set...

Notice it carries the 1986-1996 CSX anniversary date.
