Is there a trick to this? I thought that maybe the trucks were screwed into shell housing, but I have removed the screws and it won't budget. I can't see any other place where it is connected.

Depending on when the tender was made, there are either three plated steel pins that press into holes in the shell from the bottom, or pins cast in the chassis that press into holes in the shell. If you see the heads of the pins, you have to pry them out. Otherwise it's a question of prying the chassis out of the shell a little at a time from both ends, carefully to not break the shell.

Thanks for this. I don't know if I want to risk damaging the shell, so I will probably leave it as is.
