picked this up in a lot sale, I really like the control that goes from 100% reverse to 100% forward without having a switch. does anyone know if there is someone who makes a better quality pack with this feature?

I'm not sure I've never seen that before!

Bachmann made this exact thing, and mine has really proven to be a reliable old unit.

My view is that anything that doesn't put out at least 1 amp isn't worth the trouble. These little toy power packs are enough to light your house on fire or shock you to death if you take it apart, but otherwise they are all crummy. I've used the Bachmann version and it worked OK for N, but for HO it barely had enough umph to move the trollies. And that goes for all the other crummy toy power packs out there, including, sorry RP, the Tyco ones.
My suggestion is to get a low end MRC transformer, I think they all rate one amp. I've had a lot less trouble and aggravation with those. JMOP.

lucky for me one of my degrees is electrical engineering
so
if I was going to design one of these how much juice should I let it feed? 2 amps? 5amps?
I got a variac here and no interesting use for it, was thinking foam cutter but.....
probably better to just go with heavily filtered PWM max amps at any setting, and the filtering will remove more noise than the toy powerpacks

Yeah, I'd recommend getting an MRC powerpack, although I continue to use "toy powerpacks" on my various layouts and they work decently, in particular the blue LifeLike ones.

Cost. But sounds like you are well able to build your own! Speaking off the cuff, I've never seen, I don't think, anything bigger than one amp. Not sure about the Club's old layout, that too was built by an electrician.

I've heard from many sources that it is a good quality pack for the price. I use it myself.
