Ahaha, still on about that one from Dan's stream I see.

Could you post a picture of it here?

And no I don't have one, although I could ask a buddy of mine next time I see him for you. I'm looking up pictures and can only find the 2-10-0.

Ohh, it's one of the newer mantua's. Erik, that actually might be a 2-10-0 that is missing the front truck. I don't think mantua made an 0-10-0. But then again the space between the pistons and pilot looks very small. who knows? It does look nice though.

It actually is supposed to be an 0-10-0 it does look a little bit weird without the pilot truck here's a picture of the real locomotive that it is based on

ohhh ok, now that i see the prototype, yes it's spot on!

Just needs the booster truck from rivarossi's 0-8-0 and it would be real accurate.

You can see that it's adapted from the 2-10-0. Looks like the same mechanism and boiler, but without the pilot truck and with a different pilot on the front (perhaps the usual one with the compressor housing removed?). That whistle looks like the one from the Mantua 2-6-6-2. The tender is also from the 2-6-6-2 or the Prairie, which both use the same one.

This thing is really off the beaten path, and I doubt you'll ever find one, but with luck, you might be able to get the various pieces from which this has been cobbled up and make one for yourself.

Had I not seen it, I'd never believed it. Tyco or prototype.
For a prototype, that is a massive capital expenditure for
a yard locked unit who's only life is to move cars around.

It's not tyco. It's a Mantua that was produced before they shut down. It must have been produced literally right before they closed, because it's not in any catalogs from mantua on hoseeker, and hoseeker only has 1997 as their latest catalog. it must have been produced from 1998 - 2001. The engines mantua produced in the 90's were some of the finest they ever made. They are honestly quite scarce, however. Hopefully we will see these again with lionel. They have already made the 90's mike. Gorgeous, but i'm not interested with a $250 price tag.

So I've come to the conclusion that this engine is INCREDIBLY rare, and if you do find one, you're going to be paying a pretty penny for it. Better start saving!

As shaggy stated, I would make one myself. I probably could!

Sorry to barge in, but I had a terrific Pocher American that ran off a open
lift gate. Instant confetti of a treasured piece. A few months later a
professional model railroader friend repaired it so seemlessly, you’d
never guessed that it looked like it had been struck over the outfield wall,
Ran perfect, too. one day, a few years back I was reaching
into a storage cabinet and it caught on my sleeve and in an instant it
Was blown to smithereens, and I could not find some of the bits.
I kept the remains in a shoe box thinking maybe I could possibly patch it
together again. Ain’t happening what with this backlog of projects I
already got. So, when I clicked on your link I could not get my wallet
out fast enough. Those boiler motored Pochers are fine runners, and I am happy
For the second chance.

So my dad calls "Hey Alex, you sold the bowker, you priced it too low!" So im all upset, but then he says "Its going to Jeffrey McNeal." I nearly flip out of my chair. I explain to him about my advertising on the forums. He was taken aback. We printied your label and pavked it last night. Ill ship it today.

However, now I feel bad. I do hope you read the description. This locomotive needs some work. When you put leads to the motor it runs fine, but on the track she runs erratic. Strangely enough, when you press down on the engine, it moves. Seems like a grounding issue. Maybe it just needs a good servicing. I would have tried to repair it again if I knew beforehand you were getting it! Nevertheless, im sure you can get it going. Maybe the wheels just need a good cleaning.

I threw in a horn hook because I know you use them

I hope you enjoy it!

The DMIR 0-10-0 were used for pushing iron ore loads up onto the ore docks it was a big task that needed a big switcher.

That's the old kind. Any Mantua that was produced under the "Mantua Classics" line before they went bust is rare. Nevertheless, he has quite a few Mantua! I like the SP Atlantic

so a little info that I found about this locomotive I found an old post about a mantua 2-10-0 by New_York_Central here on the forums (here is a link: http://www.tycoforums.com/tyco/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9542&SearchTerms=2+10+0) and the member waw47 mentioned that in mantua's 1992 catalog they had the alton and southern 0-10-0 I can not find the mantua 1992 catalog ANYWHERE! on the internet which has led me to belive that they did not have one that year. and I also found a site that mentioned the mantua 0-10-0 (http://nebwrailroad.com/index.php/NEB%26W_Guide_to_Mantua_Steam_Locomotive_Models#0-10-0.27s) and the photo credit was Wm.K. Ok, let me explain myself.

The locomotive you are looking for is the 0-10-0 which was made right before Mantua shut down. Mantua shut down in 2001. On hoseeker, the archive of catalogs only goes up until 1997. This either means 1997 was the final year for Mantua to produce a catalog, or any catalogs from 1998, 1999, or 2000 have not been found.

Now, you must be wondering. Why on earth does he care so much about these catalogs? Well, that's because in the 1990's, mantua decided to step up their game. They started to retool many of their old models which had been in the line for over 40 years! They started adding more detail parts, road specific details, new motors, lots of good stuff!

In the 90's, they also improved their headlights. The headlights is the KEY Mantua period spotting point.

Here's what the Mantua/Tyco headlights looked like from 1970 - 1989.

During the 1980s, they were also slowly integrating the new headlight design into their models. This headlight design is most commonly found on the Camelback Goats and Booth Kelly loggers of the 80s. They are easily recognized by the bulb jutting farther out of it's housing.

Notice how far the bulb comes out of the headlight.

Now, in the 90s, mantua completely retooled a bunch of parts on a bunch of their locomotives, including, once again, the headlight. They took the 90s as an opportunity to fix their bulging bulb.

The bulb is now properly recessed into the headlight.

Ok, now here's where we put all this information to use. Since your 0-10-0 has the final variation of the mantua headlight, that indicates it was made in the 1990s. Which is also quite obvious, as this was a time when mantua was introducing many new wheel configurations and locomotives. And since the locomotive does not appear in any of the archived catalogs from 1995 - 1997, we can conclude that the 0-10-0 was made between 1998 and 2000! That's only a two year lifespan! And as evidenced, because of that, this locomotive is INCREDIBLY rare!

You bought a catalog from the 1980s period. Oh well.

The next logical step would be to figure out if either
A. Mantua stopped producing catalogs after 1997 until their bankruptcy in 2001
or
B. The catalogs between the period of 1998 - 2000 are EXTREMELY rare, and nobody really has one.

I hope this has helped you, and now we have pinpointed EXACTLY when the 0-10-0 was made!
