I picked up this Mantua 4-6-2 off ebay, and it's raised a lot of questions for me. It's boiler is metal with a plastic cab and tender, and it doesn't have a headlight, meaning it's very old. I've only seen another one online, with the number 5319 and a similar tender with a different script. That one claimed it was a kit from 1958.
What gets me on this is that it has no cab number. The cab may be a replacement, but it doesn't look like a replacement. In addition the tender lettering has got to be factory. The way I look at it, this is either an undecorated locomotive coupled to a random tender, or it's some sort of early prototype kit.
If anybody has any information on this, it would be greatly appreciated.

These mantua locomotives have so many variations and have been produced by the thousands, with so many different paint schemes, and mixed and matched with different parts by owners it's impossible to discern anything with them. There is no real way to pinpoint if it is a prototype.
Your best bet would be to google mantua 5319 b&o and see If you get anywhere. Sometimes mantua just left the cabs undecorated.

Well, according to the Tyco Red Box Era Resource, Tyco certainly did produce "black" B&O Pacific steam locomotives, which is exactly what this is, and they are dated to the early 1960's. However, the "Royal Blue" B&O 4-6-2 is pretty hard to find, while the "black" B&O Pacifics are even rarer, at least in my experience.

As far as the cab having no lettering, that is strange. What is possible is that the locomotive itself was a built kit, while the tender is just a replacement....

The tender had a knuckle coupler on it , so it's definitely been modified. I doubt it's a prototype, rather it's just an early Mantua Kit. It's a pretty rare old model, and I'm very proud to own it.
The thing I find the coolest about it... This is a 50 if not 60 year old model. After cleaning a contact and oiling the gears and drive rod joints, this old unit ran like a top. You just can't kill a Mantua...

I have a B&O Mantua Pacific that is exactly like the Royal Blue but black with white lettering. I'll get a pic later.
