I've seen two in the last two months myself. One wasn't for sale, the other was MIB, still wrapped for $3. I would have purchased it but I didn't care for the sound mechanism. which is a rolling plastic drum filled with beads that sits directly on the rails. It rotates as it's pulled along, making an interesting "plastic drum filled with beads" chugging sound.[:D]
My favorite sound car was offered by IHC back in the early 90s. It has a speaker and electronic circuit that operates off of wipers on one of the axles. Another club member and I would pull them out on run night and lash them up to our favorite diesels when the BLI sound chips reached an unbearable crescendo.[;)]
The sticker was my boy's way of telling me it needed a bit more detail for that full bodied prototypical look.[:p]

Shaygetz, I think he was referring to the Electronic one. Otherwise I'd have told you to get ME that NIB car for $3!

The Electronic Sound of Steam car IS a nice accessory. It is neither common nor especially uncommon; you might have to wait for one but they do turn up regularly, even NIB. They seem to go for around $10-15. I got two of them for like $6 combined, loose, although one was missing the innards.

Shaygetz - can you get any pics of the internal workings on the AHM/IHC car? I'm curious to how it comapares to Tyco's. I've wondered if the guts from an AHM could be made to fit into my other Tyco shell.
It would be neat if they could make "rolling stock sound" cars this way, cheaply, like we discussed before.

I didn't know Tyco made an electronic one. I figured that $3 Baby Ruth Hi-cube was a deal and, if I see him at Depot Days in the fall, I'll grab it for you. He's a local member of a rival club with a couple of AHM items I wish to abscond with so I will be earnestly looking for him.
Here's your pics. The board clips right into the box so it should be just fine for what you want to do. It really is a nice sounding unit, especially with 9 volts pushing it. I have a sound unit from a Bachmann Northern I'm trying to figure out. It has three wires and I have no clue as to how it picks up from the track or how it made the sound.

Thanks!
Surprised to see it's not a synchro unit like the Tyco. Huh - another case where Tyco was better than the others. Interesting. That won't work for a direct swap then, although you could probably wire in the Tyco synchro truck to that sound unit. But you don't really gain anything, since that synchro truck is uncommon in the first place.
At first I thought you meant you found an electronic one MIB for $3, which would have been "how could you let that sit??!" steal!

You're welcome. There are wipers on one axle, it actually syncs quite well with smaller drivered steamers.

Bakatronics is my favorite electronics dealer. Their kits are fairly easy to assemble once you get past the bad English. I use them for just about everything. >>> http://www.bakatronics.com/shop/category.asp?catid=128
