Back last year I picked up An AHM switcher c & o sw2 and finally getting around to tearing down a few of these locomotives that may be could run better. So I put this sw2 on my track and with a little nudge so run pretty decent around the track my ears were telling me that it was struggling with gears or slipping some.so I torn down the trucks and it was dry as a bone no lubrication period. The gears appear to be okay not worn out so i put a small amount of grease on them cleaned the wipers off and polished up the wheels with a dremel wire brush and slapped two traction tires on.pu it back together put her back on the track and put the power to it.Now it just sits and spins the wheels but isn't moving even with a nudge.I didn't pull the shell yet that 's next to see if anything is going on up top but just wanted to throw this problem here to the group for discussion.See if anybody has any ideas as to what might be wrong or what I might be looking for.

Well your electrical pick-up is fine because you wheels are spinning. it seems like some of your gress got on the driving wheel surfaces and is causing the wheels to slip.

Are you sure that the wheels are spinning?

I miss read. Wheels spinning. Do traction tires fit right? Is the dummy truck
free wheeling?

From what I can best figure its a gearing issue, because it would move some a bit begrudingly before I took it apart and cleaned it up and lubed it.Seems the small black gears that interact with the geared axles are crawling up or jumping out of their notch. What I am probly gonna do is put it back on the rip shelf and keep an eye peeled for a donor engine. Some where in my pile of stuff Ive got one of these switchers identical that runs and if I can find it. I am gonna pull the gears that I do know are good over to the slipping unit just for curiosity's sake thats the issue. Will let you guys know what shakes out.Sorta gettin' into these ahm engines now as I scored a bunch of rs2 s about 5 at a local show here in late january for 5$ bucks a piece, all good strong runners. Two of them I primed and repainted chessie blue and decaled to c &o which is the road I run. Will post some pics of these.

I'm back to guessing it's a split axle gear.

Here are some pics of five Ahm SR-2s that I got for my birthday back in late january at a local train show for five bucks each ,best deal Ive ever made because all five run like a top all strong runners. [i The last two I stripped the old paint off of reprimed and painted decaled to C&O BLUE which is the road I model.
