Can anyone tell me how well a 70's era SD-24 runs? I don't expect Atlas performance but I'm curious about how well it compares to earlier Mantua/Tyco engines such as the C430.

LMAO...I almost hit the "buy it now for $30.00" button (plus $10 shipping). But decided to post here first instead. I'm probably better off with a vintage Atlas model. Gotta keep that trigger finger sober.

John: The Tyco SDs aren't horrible. (I like Alexander's comment, though--its probably representative of many opinions of this engine.) Still, I'd recommend adding one or two to the collection; they're reasonably pretty and rather uncommon. I'd suggest, however, getting yourself a cheaper example first (a month or so ago an ebay lot of three CBQ SDs sold for around $15 for all three, out of box, yes, but still in great shape). I have Atlas SDs in the stable in PRR, Southern and BN, so can verify these are terrific, rock solid and reliable, but still wouldn't advise against a Tyco or two, provided the price was right. As a postscript, let me add my lousiest-performing SD is a Tenshodo with beaucoup detail up its little brass heinie... still runs like crap, though. There are stinkers in every camp and bad apples in every barrel... MagAc

Next to Espee SD-40-T2 snoots, chineese red SD-24 high noses are second on my list of favorite SD's. The air piping and turbo ports make them interesting and unique to earlier SD's. I have an Atlas N scale model which I think I paid around $75.00 for. it is smooth running and well detailed.
Yes, I'd like to add a Tyco to my collection but not for $30.00! Another impresive Tyco is the Virginian C430. That is just too cool.
Oh yea, stopped by the antique mall at lunch. Dig this. Tyco spirit of 76 C430, used....$95.00! Are they that rare or is the dealer just plain ignorant?

John: The price of the "SCL 1776" (quasi) Alco is representative of my previous comment on the degree to which average "antique" and second-hand sellers are surprised when confronted with the actual market realities of Tyco. Although, as Christmas time approaches, the prices--particularly of MIB and/or NOS Tyco items climbs to often loftily silly levels even on eBay. Patience and observation win the race in the Tyco collecting world, where there is often another one just around the corner... again, just like Tyco and Flyer forty years ago. And, again, at least for the time being... MagAc ps: The Tyco CBQ SD-24s are really sharp engines, (heck, as are the UPs and DRGs) well-worth putting on the roster (the DRG is very scarce) and certainly worth getting new in box; just shop a while.

I have the Tyco Chessie SD24, and I can tell you that it's easily one of my favorites in the line, a truly beautiful loco. The shell is nicely detailed (thanks to Atlas ;) ), has a great paint job, and the plastic handrails and PROTOTYPICAL trucks really make it stand out among Tyco's offerings. Well worth the $20 or so I paid for it two years ago.
Won't run worth a crap of course, but there are solutions to that problem... :)

Thanks guys. I see SD-24's in CBQ and UP coming up frequently in various conditions and know what to bid now.
