Hi Guys:

I've had no success tracking down the origins of this shell:

Obviously it's a GP or Sd something. I was thinking of installing it on a Bachmann GP40 chassis that I have that has a broken shell. Any help would be great

ALSO:

Does anyone have a GP7/9 shell in Santa Fe freight Y/B Road #4286? Maybe an Athearn?

Thanks,
G

My guess is an early Atlas / Roco high-nose GP38. The filled in cab steps are a telltale clue to be an Atlas of that vintage. The fan arrangement makes it a GP38.

Which steps? On the pilots? They're open!

The walkway on the nose, in front of the cab. There should be a step to climb up, but instead it looks like more of a solid ramp or something. The brake lever is cut off because of this. Compare to a similar Athearn unit for how it should look. Atlas took some flak over that one.

yep! The handrail stanchion pockets under the walkway are another clue too... I have some old Atlas GP38 and 40's that match that.

The current Bachmann GP40 reuses this tooling, and still has the goofy battery box. There are no cab doors either IIRC.

It's an Atlas GP38 from 1975, built by Roco in Austria...

Hi Tony:

Forgot you had the Atlas site on your network... had a look last night (4am?) So I have a shell and I was going to put it on my Bachman GP40 chassis but since it's as old as it is I'll look for the correct chassis for it.

Thanks,
G
