Hi Guys:
Does anyone know much about the Mantua "Heavies"
There's one on Evilbay now:

It looks like there was a batch of different models, anyone know?

I'm no expert on them, but here's what I think I know...
The Mantua "Heavies" line are kit form rolling stock. The cars are mostly, if not nearly all made up of tooling Mantua picked up from the defunct Lindberg line of model trains. The Lindberg line was '60s/'70s. Believe the series name refers to the amount of weight Mantua provided with them. Examples in the line include the short 2-bay open hopper; 40' flat with 3 crates; and others. I think they date from the 1980s. Will look at my Mantua catalogs for more info.

Frank:
I think the mantua "Heavies" pre-date the MP "MetalTrain" stuff.

| Tony has it---The Heavies are in kit form, although RTR cars were also offered and came with Mantua train sets and separately. My RTR 'heavies' are not labeled as such on the boxes. They roll well and have body-mounted couplers. I would guess they appeared after Mantua re-started the brand by the '80's, separate from Tyco. If you are looking to buy American, take a look at the underside of the cars for a made in China sticker when they moved production. These may be when the dark red boxes replaced the blue of the '80'-'90s.
