The original motor in these old Triang pieces, later Hornby, were,
regrettably, garbage. Basura. Kaka. No good. Oddly, even though
eBay demand is high, and they sell quickly North of $100, they
don't make them anymore.

So, having pretty much thinking my motor is kaput, I am
endeavoring to install a motor into a trailing coach to
act as a pusher.

To my pleasant surprise the gear doesn't really care what kind of worm it
is up against, along as it lines up. So I installed a new Hornby motor
vertically into an AHM switcher chassis, sawed to fit, only to discover
that it rides about 3 or 4 mm to high. Back to the drawing board.

I might just give that a go, thanks for the suggestion. I got a
General in the scrap box that took a bad fall, and perhaps the
motor is smaller. Thanks for the suggestion!!

well it was a thought anyway & both Rocket & General & the Rodgers use a 45 degree angle motor
You might even hafta modify it so it fits right

After years of fiddling, and no, every AHM motor and every other one in the scrap box, was
a few millimeters too tall. Got this Tenshodo WB 31 power truck. Not a perfect fit; it was too short.
However, by removing one geared axle, and replacing it with a spare gearless OO axle to clear the
gear box, the ends fit nicely into the journal boxes after a little reaming with an Exacto blade. Now
the power unit is all tucked inside the coach body. To compensate for the loss of a powered axle,
an ounce of weight is being glued to the interior roof.

The locomotive is now a dummy that will get pushed. The axle is a little tight, will try to lube it up, if
that doesn't work, will open it up and widen the axle slot.
