Over the summer I completed tuning and customizing this MDC/Roundhouse Climax kit.
Cleaned out my spare parts box to complete the job.
The pilot is from a junked steam engine, headlight and engineer are from a Bachmann 44 Tonner, added an air tank and plumbing, coupler lift bar on back and a grab rail for the back ladder, plus some roof details. The smoke stack is capped with a Box Cab headlight casting and the smoke diverter is a piece of parts sprue that had enlargements in the right places.

That is an awesome looking loco. It would look right at home in front of a string of log buggies. The sprue for the stack is an awesome touch.

Very backwoodsy

Just as an aside, the MDC Climax is a class A climax. It would have something like a marine steam engine in the cab, driving the drive shaft to the trucks. Last I knew, there was a 3 foot gauge class A in West Virginia, not on public display but owned and run by a private owner.

The one shown in Ken's post is a class B, which has two trucks and visible cylinders. A three truck version is a class C.

The only climax I have personally seen running was the class B on the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley. It's a handsome little beast and it's firebox must be very well designed. It almost always runs with a clear stack indicating very complete combustion. I've heard that it's the prototype for Bachman's HO Climax.

A very nice engine from Alex. I am updating this thread.

I found out that Alex had passed away last August.
Did not know about this until I read about this yesterday.
You will be missed Alex. Rest in peace.

Sorry to hear of Alex's passing.
Here's a movie of the only working class A climax that I personally know of:
https://youtu.be/aCgEciJ39WE

It's a vertical boiler version, rather than the horizontal boiler on Alex's model, but still and interesting machine.
It was not made by the Climax Locomotive Works, but is faithful to the basic principle of the machine.

Oh dear. I didn't know Alex, but will offer an idea, in his memory, go have a look at Geared Steam's Climax page; http://www.gearedsteam.com/climax/climax.htm
