Hi everyone! I have no knowledge of trains, but recently came across some that I want to put up for sale. There are a few bigger boxes that are supposed to have sets, but I'm not sure the trains inside the boxes are the right ones. I've looked for hours on this site, and still can't be sure I'm putting these together right.
For example, one of the larger boxes says it is a spirit of 76 set, but all of the cars inside that box don't say spirit of '76, yet I do have other spirit of '76 cars that were in a different box. Common sense would tell me they are part of that set, but sense isn't always common with me ;-)

Here are a few quick photos of what I have and what was inside the larger boxes - I'm looking to figure out what exactly is supposed to be in each set.

I feel like I have a bunch of puzzle pieces and don't know how to put them together.
The Road & rail box has the number 9010 on the side, the spirit of 76 over & under has the number 7546 on the side, and the black & red box has the number 7331 on the side. Anyone know exactly what is supposed to be in these boxes?
TIA!

Hi,

You do indeed have quite the puzzle collection there, but what fun! Anyway, here is what I can tell from the pics and other info I have:

1) First off: You are right to be confused about the Spirit of 76 stuff. The actual train sets usually had a So76 diesel and matching caboose, and the rest of the cars were generic frieght cars. In other words, those "spirit of 76" / "Bicentennial" / "State commemorative" boxcars you have, were all sold separately. Yours appear to be the more common versions but they still have some appeal.

2) The blue boxes labeled "PMI" are of course from another manufacturer, so they wouldn't be included in a Tyco set. You might make sure the cars inside those boxes aren't actaully Tycos put in there by mistake; Tyco cars will say "Tyco" somwhere on the bottom.

3) Your large red set box with the cool steam engine pic, is from the 1960's and would have had its contents packaged in individual red boxes with that same "stencil-letter" Tyco logo. You don't seem to have any of those, however. So it is probably an orphan, but you can use it for the other stuff...

4) Your blue-striped B&O Passenger cars go with the blue "Royal Blue" B&O steam engine. This was a complete set with an oval of track, sold in 1973/74 as item# 7231... but you seem to have an extra car. Maybe yours was a different/bigger set than that one... but they DO go together.

5) The "nite glow" Road & Rail set 9010 is from 1977 and should have the same train cars (and everything else!) you see in the picture on the box; nothing more or less.

6) Looks like I see one small red/brown passenger car, probably says Santa Fe. It should go with the small "old timey" steam engine that you pictured next to the Royal Blue. If you have a second red/brown passenger car, AND a white one, you would have a "Golden West" set, from 1973-74. Also needs an oval of track.

7) It looks like you have a "Chattanooga ChooChoo" set spread throughout your boxes there. Coincidentally, this was set #7331 when it came out in 1975, but it did NOT come in that red box. The train itself would include a Chattanooga steam engine, the Santa Fe crane& tender, the Gulf tanker, the Old Dutch car, and chattaboose. Also included the bridge & trestle set, with oval of track.

8) Whatever frieght cars you have left over (minus the commemorative boxcars) could probably assemble one of the many infinite variations of Spirit of 76 sets that were made... I can't find an exact match for your figure-8 box in my catalogs, but Tyco did make LOTS of sets that weren't cataloged.

9) Your Spirit of 76 Diesel seems to have a blue stripe on the nose. If it has a large seal that says "President of the United States", that is a "rare" first edition, from 1974. If it has a simpler seal, it is from late '74-75. In theory that could possibly determine which cars to put with it, but in the long run it wouldn't matter much. The "president's" versions, if the seal is intact, are highly sought after.

Hope that helps... have fun with the puzzle!

[Yes!] That helps me so much! Thank you! I don't feel so overwhelmed now that I at least have some info to start with. So much for finding what goes in the red box hehehe (unless, of course there are red boxes in my road & rail box which I didn't even open yet )
I'm sure glad I came across this site!

Tony has a resource site that has a lot of pics of train sets that you could go to and look up. There is a section for sets. I also copied the catalogs I have here and sent them to HOseeker site and you can go to the Tyco section check the different years and check through the catalogs and see what sets there were and what cars go with the sets.
Hope this also helps.

Thank you Bob. I have actually been going through Tony's site for a couple days (I can only take about an hour at a time or I'll go nuts hehehe)

I think I have it figured out the best I can. I really appreciate all the help here. You guys are great! I wasn't sure how (of if) an outsider would be welcomed. Some sites have forums that aren't as friendly.

Train Guys Rock!!! [:I]

When I post these (probably tonight) I'll be including a link to the site in my listings. I already emailed Tony to get the go-ahead to use info I found here, and permission to link back to his site - maybe you'll get some more members!

Thanks again!
