Do you know the reason why Lionel sold these box cars around 1975?

I looked around on your site and enjoyed seeing your trains. Thank you for posting Kotaro.

As to why these cars were made, the Sears car is one car in a boxed set that was sold by Sears in their department stores around the country. The other 2 box cars appear to be Lionel also. Lionel sold its cars and sets in Hobby shops, Department stores, and toy stores all around the USA. Sometimes you get a boxed car with a price tag on it saying what store sold it.

It is actually American Flyer / Lionel. When Gilbert went bankrupt in the late 1960s, Lionel purchased the company. Here is a set box with the Sears car inside.
