As to why these cars were made, the Sears car is one car in a boxed set that was sold by Sears in their department stores around the country. The other 2 box cars appear to be Lionel also. Lionel sold its cars and sets in Hobby shops, Department stores, and toy stores all around the USA. Sometimes you get a boxed car with a price tag on it saying what store sold it. frank toptrain

Are you sure that Sears car is a Lionel? I have an Athearn that is almost identical. sim-al2 Also since they cut track maintaince the trains had huge trouble making over the railroad by the end 純那 yeah They did a Rock Island volountarily

It is actually American Flyer / Lionel. When Gilbert went bankrupt in the late 1960s, Lionel purchased the company. Here is a set box with the Sears car inside.
