Here are phots of a mint stock bachmann Plasser i have owned since 1985. I recieved it as an christmas present from my parents. This is a cool piece of equipment. Mine is the Amtrak example. The other version is in U P. These are the only two roads produced for this model. I have two of the Amtrak.

Nice piece, Brian. I've always wanted to get one, how well do they run? Are they a tank type cleaner that carries alcohol?

Yes-these are the tank type that carry track cleaning fluid. To fill-you remove the two vents at rear. These run well and are fairly quiet. The pads are hard to find from what i understand--could probably go to fabric shop and get a piece of the felt type material and cut to fit??

Yes, you probably could do that, might take some experimenting. Hard to believe that little booger uses the same pancake motor as their early 4-8-4 Northern.

Yes This was done in UP. Amtrak & UP were the only 2 roads done by Bachmann for the Plasser.

You missed your chance, Brian: Plasser American EM 80
Maybe they'll re-list.
I still have the UP model I got in '81.

That is neat Nickel Plate. If i had $99,000 to buy i would as there is track near me i could run it own as the track is not being used. Bachmann did a good job on their model of it by the pictures of ebay.

I found one in nice shape at that haunt and plan to repaint it for the STC.
To me the most amazing thing about the model is: 16 wheel electric pickup (!)... but only TWO wheel drive (!!). And those two drive wheels have the tiniest traction tires I've ever seen. Then add in the typical Bachmann "cracked axle gear" problem, and you might even be down to ONE drive wheel. Still a neat little bugger.

GIC,
Can you just replace the geared wheel sets with other geared sets from any old Bachmann/Kader-cake drive? I have some spares should you need them. I don't remember if they had traction tires though!

I'll have to work on that, DJ. I don't have it stored here. Maybe in a few days.
I think the drive axle on mine is intact, but the axles on my Brill trolley from the same purchase split.

Yes, but the tires on mine are made from white silicone, and that stuff never rots, just like the fuel line tubing used as shaft couplings. They are as pliable as the day I bought it.

I don't know if there's an easy replacement for this particular gear. I'd have to take a picture of it and see if anyone knows of a match. As it stands, I don't have any bachmanns to scrap at the moment.
The tires are indeed fairly durable. Unfortunately they spun right off once I was down to one-wheel-drive . And you have to take it apart to get them back on. But just think: with 1WD, it's like having a bicycle on rails.

Yeah, I think I had it slip a tire after trying to use it as a track cleaner. Here's some advice: DON'T! The fluid just pours out of the tank, because the dispensing holes are too large. The poor thing was swimming in Windex.

DJ, there's a UP version on eBay right now. Just enter Plasser in their search field.

I believe the motor inside the Plasser is similar to the pancake motor in other Bachmann engines. I MAY have a Bachmann parts motor for this. If you haven't found one already after 2 years? I have two of the Amtrak Plassers, so I can look at those to see if that one motor I think matches, does. Assuming you (still) need the motor/truck gear. Been awhile since I took one of mine apart to clean it to get it to run finally.

well, as luck ( or fate? ) would have it, I found an N gauge Amtrak Plasser at the Bunker Hill, WV train show today. Saw the price $10, and snapped 'er up right away! Came in the box, obviously, and with all the paperwork. NOT for sale at this time! ( thanks for thinking bout it,though ) Here it is, also compared to the HO Amtrak unit I own, too.

I've also got a UP version in HO, too.
