I've been gone all week on spring break. I went up to Northern california and visited some of my favorite tourist railroads Roaring camp niles canyon etc. Anyways when i got back i saw a big box in the house and it said from bachmann industries, back on march 1st bachmann recieved my 2 steamers that needed new tender pcbs. A spectrum UP 4-8-2 and a spectrum Southern 4-4-0 (green livery). They said they wouldnt come back till late april obviously this isnt late april so i was excited. That soon changed...I opened up the box and saw 2 new spectrum boxes which threw me off cause i sent my 4-4-0 in its original box but with out the cover, i sent my 4-8-2 in an old concor coach box. When i picked up the 4-4-0 i noticed immediatly it wasnt my first generation version but the brand new version. I was suprised cause i sent both for repair but when i picked up the black spectrum box it said on the side KCS 2-10-2 DCC on board, i was mad beyond belief cause that UP 4-8-2 meant a lot to me. It belonged to one of the original owners of my favorite train store The Roundhouse and they gave me that engine because they know us better then anyone else who goes there. They are both brand new and DCC on board, i dont run DCC, just DC. They run fantastic on my layout but i had to loosen the pilot wheel of the 2-10-2 just to get it to run on my 4x8 without derailing. The lighting on the 2-10-2 is amazing!! Its got a doghouse tender which is my 2nd favorite tender next to vanderbilt but the tender light on that is directional and is amazing! i'm pleased with both engines that would usualy cost $150-$300!! i got both for $50 which was the service charge. But the invoice said they replaced both for new engines. I'm upset about my 4-8-2 and i'm gonna try to get her back! Could someone explain why they didn't just repair them?! i was going to repair them myself but now i've got wayyyy to many other engines to work on. All they had to do was put a new tender pcb in my 4-8-2 and then it'd be good to go. My 4-4-0 needed the original one removed but it's not hard. Can someone help me out with this confusion?
here she is in reverse on her "break in" run.
here's a front view of #223
my new southern 4-4-0 that replaced my older version, the differences are that the green is darker on the new ones. The tender shell is completly different, different wheel trucks are used and with the old tender they gave you a coal load a wood load and an oil bunker so you could make it the way you want, the new versions dont do that. also my old one didnt have bell and whistle chords. i still have 90% of my old versions detail parts included the coal load oil bunker spare cow catcher snowplow and many extra pipes and steps. the older version was by far better.
So can anyone tell me why didnt they just repair them, i'll be emailed them angrily to try to get my 4-8-2 back! Let me know what you guys think

Uh, because I believe their return policy states that they will chose to replace a defective locomotive if it costs more in labor/parts than to give you a new one. Bottom line, you should NEVER send in a vintage loco to Bachmann that you want to keep, because their policy is repair OR REPLACE. Not sure you can get it back now. Good luck with that. Most people would be happy to get an upgrade, but for a vintage or childhood piece, sending it to them under their program is not a good idea ( in hindsight, right? )

Well believe me im more than happy with both these engines! I really loved that 4-8-2 so now i'm never sending them anything again. I planned on sending my southern 4-8-2 and southern 0-6-0 but now i dont trust what i'll get.

It's a lot cheaper to replace a loco than to pay someone the time it takes to repair one, so you usually don't get the same unit back. It doesn't seem like they even keep the old units around for parts, so they may just destroy them.
What you get also depends on what they have on hand at the time, so they probably didn't have any Mountains in stock. It's unfortunate, but that 2-10-2 is pretty cool.

Bachmann replaces rather than repair. After all, couldn;t have the warranty at all! I've noticed Bachmann parts are hard to get a hold of.

Occasionaly it can work in your favour. I have a K4 Pacific-Spectrum and it's going back and I'm requesting one of their generic Baldwin 2-8-0 Consolies which is much more useful to me....

yeah it makes a lot more sense now, and if i had known they could switch it for something totaly different i wouldnt have sent them there in the first place. I had to adjust the pilot wheel and trailing wheel for the 2-10-2 in order for it to run right, who says a 2-10-2 can't run on '18 radius turns
