Was working on a shop engine from a a big lot of HO, and this nice looking Tyco Royal Blue looked good to work on. I started on it, and discovered that one of the trucks was locked up. I tried to get the truck removed from the tender frame, and it broke off. I've just recently started working on some Tyco tender drives ( for a guy in Texas ), so don't have much experience with them yet. But I thought the zinc pest problem was long gone from Tyco history when these tender drives came out. I guess not. AT any rate, the train shop gave me the engine for parts, as it's useless to them now. I have a Royal blue myself where the engine was missing parts, so I can probably combine the two to get a running engine and tender. This engine looks fantastic , like it was hardly run. Shame the tender unit had the issue. The other swiveling truck has no issues, it was just the one.

isn't this the same tender drive as the Chatanooga locos? You could always swap a junker loco for this one

Or swap in the power chassis for/from a Bachmann 44 ton diesel from a junker or thru the Bachmann parts dept online store. Would give her DCC if you get a complete new chassis from there. Mike the Aspie

Actually, I had a wild idea which is to put either a Hustler chassis under the tender shell, or one of those old Revell SW-15 diesel chassis's. Either could provide mega power for this engine, compared to the weak POC it's got now. The Revell diesel chassis might be better, it's got good low-speed drive, swiveling powered trucks. Not sure about size, but will be fun to look at the possibilities. I'm just not sold on the tender drive theory, quite frankly.

Tender drive works fine when its smooth and quiet. I have owned several high end Roco European steamers that were tender drive, and they ran as smooth and flawlessly as a Kato diesel or any other newer high end diesel drive. The drive being in the tender allowed for much finer detail on the locomotive. Granted, new motor technology has about all made tender drives a thing of the past, but they can work well. I still feel the modern Bachmann 44 ton chassis is the best one to swap in, the trucks look very similar to some tender trucks and the newest version of that chassis(in thier online parts store)comes with factory DCC installed. The 2-8-0 as its built rolls nice, smokes nice and looks great IMHO. Espically a really nice and shiny Royal Blue! The PT can be made to run well, but the constant maintance to keep it that way is a PITA if you want to run it alot. More poles on the armature and mini ball bearings on the armature shaft would have gone along ways to helping, along with some more"meat" on the gears. Paper thin plastic gears don't work well long term pulling loads on model train layouts. Shame Tyco didnt just use the old MU2 power truck in the tender, that would have been a better choice back then. As soon as money permits, I will be picking up a couple 44 tonner drives to swap in.
