This is my layout. It hasn't been worked on in a while due to the small apartment we live in and family obligations. These photos are several years old, but the layout looks much the same except for a mountain in the back corner.

This is the layout as originally planned. It was laid out for Atlas track, but the actual track is handlaid on matchstick ties.

This is the wye area on the top level. The area behind the train is now a mountain.

A view of the lower level beneath the wye.

The lower level and the yard lead.

The entrance to the yard.

The tunnel portal has been cut down to just clear a high cube boxcar. The effect is similar to the tight clearance routes in the east, where excess height cars were banned.

The yard under construction.

Another view of the yard.

James, I had a similar problem with photo bucket- many of us did,
they now charge for use so your photographs are unviewable. You
can upload directly to the Tyco Forum by shrinking the pixelation
down to 800 - 1000 across, and don't use any symbols like % or #
or worse yet . or, which won't go through. I would enjoy seeing
your layout, old or new.

Beats the heck out of me, but now I see them, and WOW that is
an impressive arrangement. Did you also hand lay that track???

I just upload stuff right of my computer, like I mentioned, just
be sure the pixelation does not exceed 800 to 1000 and omit
any punctuation in title.

I spent the past two days downloading all of my stuff from photobucket, then uploading the appropriate photos here. Damned if i'll let somebody charge me for the use of my own photos.

Yes, all track is handlaid. The switches are all number 5s made in a fasttracks jig, then curved to fit the site, if necessary. The three wye switches are built using an old Atlas wye as a template. I find handlaid track allows me freedom to do things not possible with sectional track.

A magnificent look to it that cannot be replicated with sectional track.

Quite a layout. I, too, am impressed with the hand laid track. Not many people doing that any more. It takes a pretty good roadbed to make it work, and then, to have that roadbed on grades, two levels, and curves on grades is going some.

Nifty layout! It would be interesting to learn more about how you lay the ties and rails. Are the ties glued, or possibly every nth tie nailed down, or do you fasten the rail and ties together?

The ties are matches with the heads cut off, cut to length and stained. The subroadbed is dimensional pine board, cut to fit. I glue the ties down, then lay the rail, spiking it about every 4th tie. All in all it's a VERY sturdy construction. I can actually walk on the layout without worrying about it collapsing.

Handlaid track is tedious but when you have more time than money it gives you something to do.

Wow. That really is hand laying. Almost like the gangs that worked at the front of the railroads tracks as they were expanding East and West.
