I am going to pick up a lot of trains tomorrow. They are prewar Lionel O gauge and early postwar American flyer S gauge. There are four Mantua kits with the lot. They are blue boxes, with a lift off lid. There is a crossbuck with the words "Mantua Metal Products Company" and below the word "Mantua" in large white letters. How old are these? Thanks in advance. I will post pictures tomorrow, when I have them.

My guess is 50’s. The ones I’ve seen generally have kits of metal/wood construction.

For dating those cars use HOseeker. They have a great catalog collection open to everybody. Those four you can tell by the boxes were sold at the same time. These are from a time when Mantua made all metal cars that had embossed printed paper sides. The gondola, box car, tank car, hopper, and reefer are made that way.

Wonderful Mantua pieces, these are real survivors from when HO was
sort of in the line of TT scale, or N scale back in the '70's. And no
thanks, I have too much stuff as it is! Maybe a decent flip might
happen on eBay.
