It runs, barely, clearly the motor looks pretty gummy, the pick ups are grimed, and it's missing pantograph. I really want to have this run nice. Would a good disassembly and cleaning be enough, or maybe the brushes are toasted. Is there another Bachmann chassis that would snap in place from another, more common, locomotive?

You may be able to alter an Athearn chassis and fit it under it.
They were used by American GK when they made their E60CFs and E60CPs.

You can try an Athearn SD-9 chassis with a little bit of modification. As Sean pointed out, that's what American GK used. If you want to be more accurate, you can swap out the EMD trucks for GE style trucks.

Hmmm, I don't know that much about that particular unit in regards to what other Bachmann locomotive chassis could be substituted, but if you do want to first try to clean the gears and pick-ups, I recommend using Rubbing Alcohol, as I've used it, and it works well at "cutting" through the grime and grease. :)

Bachmann has or had a site where you talk to the Bachman. It is a part of there forum. Maybe the parts you need are available. If not they all used pancake motors. Any SD trucked loco can provide a drive. Don't know till you try. frank

I would clean up the pancake motor, oil it and see how it runs. If you dont like that, I would go with an Athearn chassis swap. I would use a U33C chassis instead of the SD9, the trucks are close to the real thing. There are a few on ebay right now.

Cleaned out the motor, resoldered the motor contacts, and reset the brushes, which were held in lightly, and coming loose and she came to life, nicely.

For an Athearn repower, the SD9 frame is the correct fit, just install trucks from one of the 6-axle U-boat GE's. As for Bachmann parts, most likely Bachmann won't have anything that old readily on hand. I'll check if I have any of the right style of pantograph.

Find a 70's Bachmann E60CP #951 on Ebay/train show and use the parts from that. Bachmann used the same parts on both engines.

Thank you for the kind replies. As to this piece, a little cleaning and resoldering the wires to the brush contacts did the trick:

Looking back through the post, I did not realize that Athearn made a BB e 60 type, that is a surprise. I did get a used Athearn BB SD9 and cut up the chassis to fit the width of the Bachmann shell, hope to get a little more done on it between now and Monday. As you can see, the SD 9 chassis is quite a bit shorter than the Bachmann shell:
I would most certainly louse it up if I cut the shell, so will cut the chassis and glue it in with JB weld.

Athearn never produced an E60, however American GK used Athearn chassis and parts for their drives.
The SD9 chassis fits under the Bachmann E60CF shell, which as you discovered is significantly shorter than the E60CP.
The Athearn FP45 would be a match for the E60CP.......

Good to know, thanks. If I end up with another one of these critters I'll put that info to good use.
Always had this bug for electrics, probably since I saw one of the last in service GG1's highballing south on the Northeast Corridor back in '77. It was all black with a crummy CR patch on the nose, but Lord did that thing move.
