In the December '82 Model Railroader, Bob Ottosen's four-page article described how to slice and dice a Mantua 4-6-0 boiler and a Roundhouse "Old Timer" Mogul frame into an American Standard locomotive as shown below.



I always thought this would be a neat project... Wish I'd picked up one of those Roundhouse kits back when they were cheap and readily available!

For a time, MDC made a 4-4-0 like that (more recently than the article). I think it had the same boiler as the Mogul, though, and not a tapered one as in this picture.

The 4-6-0 boiler really looks pretty nice on this engine.
